Figured we could use a thread on this with all the USA/Mexico talk going on in the main forum.

The tournament gets underway today. USA's first game is tomorrow and Mexico play their first on Friday.

Anybody plan on going to any games? None of the group games are anywhere near me, but I've considered going to Chicago if we make the semis.

I'm confused, is this the "Copa D'Oro" dumbed down so you guys will know what you're playing for. Or is it a different competition?

We wouldn't want it to sound too foreign, calling it football is bad enough....:D

Who said anything about a cup of Doritos?:D Depends on the dip, (no, not the one using the computer) as long as you don't serve regurgitated beans.

Not a big fan of the Gold Cup but we have to represent and be the best CONCACAF have to offer...wherever Mexico is we should be there and beat the bejeezus out of them...what I'm excited about is Copa America.
We won't win a thing though if we play like we did vs Guatemala.

Ah yes 1-0 win to the USA. Not the most beautiful game, but a win is a win. I think we will have a much tougher time against T&T.

Donovan=terrible free kick taker
Gooch=kind of a hot head, his stock has fallen considerably now

Nice to see Dempsey and Twellman combine to score a goal, all started by a well worked header from DM Beasley.

Went to the Gold Cup game in Miami on Wednesday night. I only stuck around for the first half of the Haiti vs. Guadeloupe. Wasn't very entertaining, but must admit that Haiti brought their local band out and played some great beats throughout the game. The weather also didn't help things out, but I probably wouldn't recommend going to it unless your country is playing. Hopefully the other groups provide more entertaining matches.

It was ugly, wasn't it?

He's just not the same player that put Borgetti in his back pocket at CCS in September 2005. I don't know if it was the lackluster World Cup or playing in the same team as Titus Bramble :D , but he's definitely regressed. It was disappointing that, at least for me, it was clear that the Guats were trying to get in his head, and it obviously worked.

I'm hoping for a better showing against T&T.

You and me both. He has the talent and athleticism, but I think he loses sight of what is going on while on the pitch. But nevertheless...

The keeper should have saved that but a great placement for a shot.

No kidding. Although I can't think of anyone who'd be that much better.

This isn't necessarily Gold Cup-related, but it's USA/Mexico rivalry-related and a good read, so I thought I'd post it.

SI's Grant Wahl did a soccer tour of Mexico and wrote a piece about it. Given the prior discussion about Marquez's head but of Cobi Jones and Sanchez's kick at Eddie Johnson, I thought the following quote was interesting:

Mexican Soccer Lesson #2: To Understand Mexican Rivalries You Must Understand Ardido. As the teams leave the field at the end of the Clásico Tapatío I notice a familiar sight. Not one of the players shakes hands. Nobody trades his jersey. I've seen this before, of course, whenever the U.S. and Mexican national teams meet each other. When I ask my friend, the journalist Miguel Ángel Briseño of Reforma, about it, he mentions the word ardido -- a sort of rageful pride or courage that's common among Mexican soccer players.

For years I have tried to understand why great players like Rafael Márquez would spear Cobi Jones with his head in the final moments of Mexico's 2002 World Cup elimination, or why Oswaldo Sánchez would try to cut down Eddie Johnson following the U.S.'s second goal in Phoenix last February. Now, after watching the way the Chivas and Atlas players respond to their rivalry, I have a much clearer idea. Later, I track down what Sánchez told Mexican reporters about the incident in Phoenix.

"It gives me a lot of courage," he said, "because they make fun of us and enjoy it. It makes me angry that they make fun of me, it's true, and much more that they make fun of my country. Therefore I gave him a kick of ardido (rageful pride)." Ardido. I don't have to like the explanation -- nor did coach Hugo Sánchez, who replied, "one must maintain his form. I'll speak with him to avoid situations like this." -- but at least now I understand the phenomenon. It's not so much about the Americans (although that's certainly part of it) as it is about the way Mexican players treat all their most heated rivalries.

The rest of the story is here (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/the_bonus/05/30/grant.wahl/index.html).

It looks like Salcido could miss the Gold Cup and Marquez will the miss the Gold Cup.
