For years on these boards, many people have posted the theory that "all we need is a winning team on the field and then attendance will get higher."

Well, here we are, a third of the way into the 2007 season and the Red Bulls are averaging 9765 fans per game. 12th of 13 teams in the league. And the thirteenth team, Kansas City, is averaging 9720...only 45 fans-per-game less.

So what gives with the theory?

New York has a committed multi-billion dollar owner, the best coach in the history of U.S. Soccer, a forward from Colombia averaging a goal per game (and the Colombian community in is one of the most rabid soccer-loving ethnic groups in the New York area)...and most of all, we have a WINNING TEAM!

So why are the Red Bulls near the bottom of the attendance table?

I'll tell you why.

It is because the team still doesn't have the right name.

Within the past three weeks, Kristian Dyer of soccernet.com, and Lindsey Dean & Ray Hudson of the "American Soccer" show on Gol TV have all called for a return of the Cosmos name, logo, and colors to represent New York soccer.

Even Mark Abbott, MLS President, was quoted in Kristian Dyer's article on May 15th saying, "I don't think the league would be opposed to naming a new team the Cosmos."

I say, why wait for a new team?

Kill the Red Bulls brand right now and get New York soccer back on track as soon as possible. Let's not wait until 2010 or beyond.

Let's reclaim the Cosmos tradition and put New York soccer back on the map immediately.

A winning team alone will not be successful in this market as long as people are able to say, "Yeah, they're winning, but they're still not the Cosmos."

This market needs a combination of star quality and name recognition and winning.

Right now we've only got one of the three -- winning. Add the name recognition and then it will be easier to sign the stars. And then we'll have a hit on our hands.

Dyer, Dean, Hudson, and Abbott have it exactly right.

I'm now convinced that it's the location of GIANTS STADIUM that is to blame. You can also argue that it's RBNY's Marketing that's not getting the job done, but it's more likely that it's the stadium location.

RED BULL PARK better open ASAP!!!!

"fifa magazine has an article in its most recent issue about how good a job red bull salzburg is doing with marketing. great new stadium, team is winning, big name coach, developing young players, scouting for talent all over the world, etc. they also mention red bull ny and have a pic of carlos mendes.

new york copy this formula and will be a powerhouse pulling in 25k per game. "

I posted this exact same thing in the week 8 attendance thread. If you had been paying any attention at all you would not have started this idiotic thread.

Let's not wait until 2010 or beyond.yeah, let's ask Dietrich Mateschitz to drop the Red Bull brand from his NY soccer team. i don't think that's too much to ask. also, could you have Mateschitz deliver me a couple large pizzas as well? and i've always wanted a magic carpet, have him bring me one of those too. i'll PM you my address.

For the million motherf***king time, it's not the location of Giants Stadium that is to blame when the Giants are selling out the stadium, is it? The location is not the goddamned issue. Whiny little boys and girls who cry about the bus and how far GS is, don't really want to go to the match that bad.

Maybe it's the fact that we don't have a team thats been around for 100 years, and there's no real history or tradition dating back decades that have people dedicated to it. Maybe THAT'S the problem . . and if it is, there's not a goddamned thing we can do about it. Nothing will change overnight, and even when Red Bull Park finally opens, things STILL won't change overnight.

Last year proved there are almost 100,000 people in the tri-state area at LEAST who love this game, but they don't know this team, and don't want to know this team because it's American, they think the style of play is shit (an unfounded assumption), they know Ronaldinho is not on the squad, and we're not competing in the Champions League!

Orrrrrrrr uhhhhhh, derr, maybe its the NAME . . yeah, people don't like the NAME, so maybe if we like NAME it somethin else people be like "Ohhh wow, what a neato keen name, I think I'll go to a GAME...tee-hee, I rhymed!" and all of our troubles will be solved!

Bullshit.

A winning team alone will not be successful in this market as long as people are able to say, "Yeah, they're winning, but they're still not the Cosmos."

You, and the handful of rickety old men longing for the days of old, are the ones saying that. No one else is saying that. Time to head back to the home, Junior Soprano.

Come on Dog, the theory is if they win the whole tamale one season and they are contended ever since, no two or three games...

I'm sorry, but nobody gives a crap about branding. Fans of soccer aren't suddenly going to care because you bring back the Cosmos name.

Give it some time. After 12 years of mostly crap, it takes a little while for people to trust you again. If they are this good for the next two years, attendance will be good at Red Bull Park.

I am not entirely ready to give up on the winning = higher attendance. The season is early, and we had a great start, but have been somewhat inconsistant the past few weeks. As the season wears on and we are currently tops or near and we have JPA scoring goals and some hype building our attendance will be higher.

The stadium is another huge problem. I think once Harrison is built the attendance should skyrocket. The location, the soccer foundation in the town, the ethnic backrounds, coupled with the fact that Detier has flat out said that the real star players (Beckham level) will come when the stadium is built.

So you want to have a team that was virtually unknown for the first several years of its existance. And then managed to bankrupt the rest of the league in trying to keep up with a poor business plan based entirely on over-spending on player acquision? Makes sense to me.

The name "Cosmos" didn't put fans in the seats. The names "Pele" and "Beckenbauer" did.

Dyer, Dean, Hudson, and Abbott have it exactly right.

Don't let me take anything away from Kristian Dyer for getting those interviews and writing that article, he did a great job. But have you actually spoken to Dyer in person about the Cosmos topic? You know, outside of what he writes for the press? Better yet, would you even recognize him if you walked passed him in the stadium? Maybe you even met him the day the Metrostars paid tribute to the Cosmos circa 2001. I know Kristian had plenty of interaction with the Cosmos Fan club that day.

Who exactly is Lindsey Dean? I mean don't get me wrong, I watch 'American Soccer'. My question is hypothetical. What exactly makes him an expert? What has he done in the sport of soccer? For f*c*'s sake, no one here, other then you and I, even knows the person you're talking about.

Good old Ray Hudson. He always has it exactly right doesn't he. Since you watch GolTV perhaps you remember the episode when he ate sourkrout in his underwear after he announced Klinsmann as the new US coach. Or how bout more recently, don't you think Italy is a great footballing country to visit in 2012 for the EUROs? When Ray goes he can take you with him.

What was the line Abbott used about the Cosmos... he wouldn't be opposed?!? Well guess what, he does have it right. I wouldn't be opposed either. That is of course if Pepe Pinton gives up the name to an investor willing to build a NYC franchise for a reasonable price. The only problem there is that his head is as far up his @$$ as yours, thinking that the Cosmos name is actually worth a fortune, and will one day make soccer popular 'again' in United States.

Let me remind you again good sir, the Cosmos were the BEST and the WORST thing to happen to American soccer. And don't you forget it when you think about creating another 'broken record' thread.

What is the frequency of Dog's bring-back-the-Cosmos threads? Every three months?

You are spoiling the legacy at this point, 'dog.

Don't give me this 1/3 of the season shit; you know damn well the reasons why attendance has been low thus far. Hell, at least see what the #s are like for June 16 before you start shooting off about how Red Bull doesn't work as a soccer brand in the area (for this season - RB certainly are looking at this long-range).

Do you know how friggin confused people would be with yet another rebranding right now?

At this point, though I used to be somewhat sympathetic: shut the Hell up. You sound ridiculous.
