View Full Version : Club v. Country

With in-season international play getting started it got me thinking about what I cared about more. If FCD and USA play at the same time what do I watch, or if I am Landon Donovan and I have to choose to play for my club or my country who should I choose? (we already know who he would choose. )
I say country comes first if I am a player. (but if they play for a different country it changes my opinion of them leaving for international play).
As a fan, I guess it comes down to how important each match is, but I again would usually choose country over club.

country is always first. there aren't too many ROBs in the world that will decline country over and over.

Country first .. at least until we hold the WC.

or the American player is risking his $70 million contract (which should be a long time from now).

I am guessing the fans of the bigger clubs in England might have a different perspective than we do?

Club first.
FCD at least has a chance to win MLS Cup.
The USMNT and the World Cup? Not in my lifetime.

All depends on the circumstances, in both cases (player or spectator). I don't begrudge Landon for not wanting to leave his club teammates high and dry the entire summer. I don't always skip FCD games for USMNT games. However, if the US is playing in a competitive tournament vs FCD playing a regular season game against someone other than Houston or Chicago...I watch the Nats.

Country. I may move to Maine or Oregon or NYC or wherever there may be another club. FCD could get under bad management and completly crap out and fold, but I will always be an American and the USMNT will never fold.

I agree with Texgator. While FCD is my go-to team for soccer, I started in with the USA in the 2006 WC, then went on to FCD this year.
And yes to the comment asking if fans of older clubs overseas are club-first. I seen it in a documentary. :)

Club first except for World Cup qualifiers and the World Cup.
(So I didn't vote)

Shouldn't there be a third option to this poll? "Player." Not sure how often it happens, but I suppose Beckham may be a good example of fans following a player from place to place as opposed to being rooted into a club or country and being happy to have whoever signs up (or is called up).
Maybe I just wanted to be the guy who complains about the poll options. :D

If your man-love for a certain player trumps your allegiance for any certain team, your not allowed to vote on this poll!

Only a chick would complain about that .. a chick who's interested in being rooted into by that player.
Or maybe a guy is into being rooted .. not that there's anything wrong with that.

Hey, I agree that following one player around the soccer world is the height of pose-a-tude. I figured maybe that should be an option so we could all laugh and point.
But, uh, there's gonna be a lot of frowny faces around town when Toja's loan runs out. :(

For the record, I voted for "country" and would have regardless of how many relevant options I had to choose from.
I was for it before you were against it. :D
