Here is a link to an article in The Guardian:

The subject is Beckham and United but it really talks about the state of football in the UK.

Bit overwrought, don't you think? I wonder if "Tom Bower" is a pre-menstrual woman?

I mean, the basic message about the state the financial larcency at the heart of the game is getting us into is valid, but nothing he offers on the Beckham saga is anything other than unsubstantiated conjecture and rumour. And it's presented in a breathless "you have ten minutes to leave the planet" style that makes you wonder just how close deadline was when he bashed this one out.

Some of it is just shy of preposterous in the way it portrays the main characters in this "tale".

Sorry, but deeply unimpressed.

You may be right Matt,

Ferguson is by no means a modest man, don’t get me wrong. You could float ships on that guy’s ego. But the exact nature of his dislike for Beckham is more likely to be a general, default dislike of the lifestyle young footballers now have access to. And Beckham is the most avaristically enthusiastic player of the fame game in world football. No one does it better, as they say. Look at his current “promotional tour”. Promoting what, for Chrissakes … promoting the Beckham brand.

Ferguson wants shot of a player he recognises as being in danger of becoming bigger than the club. And with the 4-3-1-2 system that he has been employing more and more in recent months, he has found a way of playing … and winning … without Beckham. He is disposable, in football terms. Especially if the Ronaldinho move goes through.
