austria 0-1 scotland

decent result and justified on the balance of play. austria had a little spell of pressure at the start of the 2nd half but all in all we deserved the victory.

a nice goal as well by all accounts. have to say i'm happy with the direction the team and the midfield in general is taking. we seem to be wanting to try and keep hold of the ball at last and with players like ferguson, fletcher, hartley, maloney, brown, mcfadden etc in midfield we can look a decent side and more importantly, actually create many more chances during games.

gary o'connor is certainly looking a much improved due to his move to lokomotiv moskva

don't want to put a jinx on us as we seem to struggle in toftur but i can see us winning 2-0 or 3-0 next wednesday night.

I saw brief highlights of the game last night and it seemed that we dominated most of the game. The goal was very well taken by O'Connor, but to be honest the keeper should have saved it.

I was delighted for O'Conner.

We outplayed Austria away from home, we should've won by more. It's all very encouraging stuff at the moment.

Mcleish has impressed me with his approach thus far :)

results in saturday games....

Faroe Islands 1-2 Italy

France 2-0 Ukraine

Lithuania 1-0 Georgia

kind of as expected. italy though squeezed past the faroes and could drop points if they carry that form into wednesdays match away to lithuania.

france played well 2nd half. ribery, anelka and nasri all impressed.

lithuania prove that they are a tough team to get a result against on their home soil. luckily we've already got the 3 points in the bag from there.

here's the table as it stands after todays matches..

1 France 6 5 0 1 14 2 12 15
2 Italy 6 4 1 1 11 6 5 13
3 Ukraine 6 4 0 2 8 6 2 12
4 Scotland 6 4 0 2 11 6 5 12
5 Lithuania 6 2 1 3 4 5 -1 7
6 Georgia 7 2 0 5 13 13 0 6
7 Faroe Islands 7 0 0 7 2 25 -23 0

there is every chance that this group could come down to goal difference, so the faroes italy game will actually be a good result for us if we can beat the faroes by at least three clear goals (i'm going for a three nil win on wednesday).

yes but the goal difference from the faroes matches won't count if we finish in a tie.... head to head comes first.

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings.

a) Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question.
b) Superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question.
c) Higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question.
d) Higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question.
e) If, after applying criteria a) to d) to several teams, two or more teams still have an equal ranking, the criteria a) to d) will be reapplied to determine the ranking of these teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria f) and g) will apply.
f) Results of all group matches: 1. Superior goal difference 2. Higher number of goals scored 3. Higher number of goals scored away from home 4. Fair play conduct.
g) Drawing of lots.

3 points in the bag.

first half we started brightly. kept up a good tempo. moved the ball about well. scored a nice free kick and then a well worked 2nd goal.

2nd half for 35 minutes we were awful. long aimless balls, no ball retention, 2nd to almost every ball. fletcher should have been removed earlier than he was. i'm a celtic fan but surely it's time to go with an in form hutton at the minute over alexander.

he's done well for us in the past but he's done now.

anyone else think that ferguson went for the yellow card deliberately? i'm positive that he did. misses home game against lithuania now rather than walking a tightrope and perhaps missing home game against ukraine.

some pics from the game...

How many members of the Tartan Army made the trip to Torshavn?

Great to see Shaun Maloney (i'm still sorry that he left Celtic) score such a nice free-kick goal!
