Congratulations Schalke! Very lucky, but sometimes that's all you need!

Good luck in the next draw, this is the furthest you've ever gotten in the Champions League.

For sure. "Deserved" is a stretch considering they were busy standing 10 guys in front of the penalty area and defending even when Porto got a man sent off.

Oh, come on! I have nothing against a German team advancing but calling this win deserved is quite an overstatement.

What is this "deserved/undeserved" non-sense. Defence wins titles, an amazing goalkeeper is part of the team, and the penalty shoot-out was a onesided affair.

Just like the 120 minutes was a one sided affair in Porto's favor. Some posters wrote it was deserved, if you want to go by the deserved scale Porto should have advanced.

Oh, come on! I have nothing against a German team advancing but calling this win deserved is quite an overstatement. Schlake did not play well, but Neuer kept them in with some outstanding saves (especially the one against Sektioui) and Porto was quite wasteful in their overall gameplan, which did the other part.

Thats the nature of CL football though. Who expected Shalke to travel to Portugal and control the game? Porto are a very offensive minded side compared to Shalke so them defending was expected tactically. They did well and Porto failed to capitalize. On top of that, Neuer and his defense did their part. Thats how it goes.

I was telling you this is nonsense as Schalke won this, and not really so by great luck but by keeping the ball out of the bloody net.

You don't deserve to advance just because you can keep possession or shoot with the outside of your boot.

It's a different matter whether you wanted the more asthetically pleasing or whatever side to go through on "moral" or other grounds...

Edit: End of discussion for me.

Check back and look if I did start this "nonsense" and then tell me what you find! In my opinion there is not a deserved winner or undeserved loser when it comes to a penalty shootout

Thats the nature of CL football though.

If it is the nture of football, how can "deserved" and "undeserved" even exist at all?

Well although thats true I do think teams deserve credit when going through, even if it is in the way Shalke did today. Porto controlled the game but were often wasteful and folded during penalties, which teams deserve credit for as well because it is difficult and nerve wrecking. Anyways, teams should get applauded for their defensive performances as much as their offensive performances.

Btw, I think it's in their interest to fire Slomka soon anyway. He's been undermined too much (did Kuranyi really deny him the handshake when going off?) and I think it's bad coaching not to try to go for an away goal.

Yup, he just walked past Slomka. I think he was pissed at being subbed and he's suppose to be one of the leaders on the team with that kind of behaviour. The commentator (SAT 1) mentioned if the coach was Stevens he would have given Kevin a air plain ticket to Brazil.

Btw, never mess with ze Germans in penalty shoot outs.

You have been warned. We are send into secret training camps from a young age, perfecting our skills in this discipline until we reach maturity. But don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

Congrats on reaching the 1/4 finals of the CL for the 1st time in your history! Somehow you cope very well with pk's in decisive away games (just remember the UEFA Cup final at Giuseppe Meazza stadium against Inter in 1997)...;)

Schalke was very poor tonight (even with 11 vs 10), but there was a "sorcerer" in the goal named Manuel Neuer! Sensational performance during the whole game ... crowned by the fantastic second pk save!

The reporter said Schalke lost every pso since the win in 1997, which is true, they lost psos against Slavia Praha in 98/99 and against Bröndby Copenhagen in 03/04 I think.

About the deserved/undeserved thing: I'd say the match was deservedly won by Porto with 1:0... but they were not THAT great. They were far better between minute 10 and 20, apart from that they controled the game and had possession all the time, but really dangerous scenes were very rare... in the extra time there were some more again since Schalke started attacking. Maybe a 2:0 win of Porto had not been undeserved, but let's not forget the scene when Helton should have been sent off, that might have changed the rest of the match in Schalkes favour. Over the 2 legs, I probably wouldn't call Schalke progressing undeserved... both where pretty equal, maybe slight advantages for Porto, but Neuer ultimately decided the outcome.

Well, that's true. But those games weren't so decisive resp. important...;)

I must have lost years of my life watching that game....:D

As for the game itself I´m the first to admit that being savy in a tactical sense have done wonders for Schalke in Europe but we are still suffering from not having a "best performance" worth mentioning.

Which is why we are outsmarted to often in the Bundesliga...
