And why? :)

[This thread isn't about whether or not there should be an MLS New York Cosmos, or when such a team should begin playing. There are plenty of other threads for that]

Clive Toye: The New York Cosmos he helped to start in the NASL actually had a pretty humble beginning (as did the NASL as a whole), so he very well would have a stronger starting budget for an MLS Cosmos than he began with for the NASL Cosmos.

Pelé: It wasn't really that long ago that this was being seriously considered (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=257417&cc=5901).

Andrew Murstein: It seems like this could've happened (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=429192&root=us&cc=5901), though it would've involved relocating the Kansas City Wizards (which thankfully didn't happen).

Giorgio Chinaglia: He ran the NASL New York Cosmos in its final years and more recently ran ChampionsWorld, LLC. Could a third time be the charm, particularly within the MLS salary-cap guidelines?

Depending on who you talk to, Chinaglia ran the Cosmos into the ground. I just watched "Once in a Lifetime" again, and it seemed like people were putting at least partial blame on him for the demise of the Cosmos.

I don't know if Clive Toye would have the drive or desire to tackle something like that again. He'd be a good choice, though.

Murstein would probably be the one to do it, but there would probably need to be a stadium plan in place, unless they could work a deal with Hofstra, or find a way to make Mitchel Field work (is it expandable?).

Not Chinaglia. He'd turn the locker room into a war zone.

No way Mithchell Field can be used for MLS. Even though it holds a little over 10,000, the whole stadium is metal bleacher except for one little part of the stadium.

Combine Clive's proven know-how (and contacts) with Pele's PR and Murstein's funding (including a stadium of their own), and you'll have the Cosmos. Nuff said.

Has anyone ever read Clive's book? I don't even know the title.

A Kick In the Grass.

It's available on amazon.com (add Stoker Season and you may be eligible for free shipping! Shameless plug).

If you're into the origins of the Cosmos (particularly Pele's acquisition) and the early years of the NASL, it's a must-read. Go for it.

He would definitely be my first choice, but would he still want to go through all that again at his age now?

This would indeed be the ideal combination to get an MLS New York Cosmos off the ground, but would it have enough clout and/or money to convince Peppe Pinton to sell the rights to the New York Cosmos name/logo/colors?

BTW, here's a picture (http://www.soccerhall.org/images/NASL%20Photos%20Web/Inductees_Banners1.jpg) of Clive Toye (standing with his grandson) at his 2003 induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York.

Don Garber once again mentioned a possible second New York MLS franchise during halftime of yesterday's Real Salt Lake - FC Dallas game on ESPN2.

That's a really good book, though inevitably self-serving.

I really like Shep Messing's autobiography, too, which is out of print, though I wonder if it's not on the order of Chuck Barris' classic bit of fake-revelatory literature.

Would Shep Messing actually be the best candidate to run an MLS New York Cosmos expansion team?

Considering this linked article (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11859119&postcount=108), is there a chance that any of the four listed candidates here will get involved with the possible MLS New York Cosmos in come capacity?

Oh, absolutely not. I brought it up to direct anyone interested in the Cosmos to a good read on the ambiance surrounding the team, and he has some things to say about the ownership and the Pele signing.

Frankly, I don't think any of those folks would be a good choice, and I don't think any of them will be involved in running an MLS team.

I think there's a Lot of buzz going on around a couple of things and we need to take serious note. 1) both Shep Messing, and Garber have mentioned the possibility of a 2nd NY MLS franchise. New york has been mentioned by others as the 2nd metropolitan area to get two MLS franchises before (don't argue with me technically Giants Stadium is in the NY Metro area). LA being the other. 2) There is significant interest in reviving the Cosmos lable. It's been talked about repeatedly in the press, and I think powers that be are noticing. 3) The league is nearing Garber's 16 team "pause" in expansion. San Jose seems to be a done deal. They are coming back. That means there's two other expansion slots open. Las Vegas has their act together, and the right formula for expansion; $, and SSS. That leaves one spot; NY. It's pretty much a no brainer. If you get any of those guys involved in some kind of honorary fashion (not in the running of the team) I could see it happening. Don't worry about Pinton. He'll get his money.

none of the above. Pele is the best option, but it's a pretty unrealistic choice.

How can people say Pele is the best option?!

Do y'all not remember his horrible investment history?! This guy nearly lost all his money due to bad investments, listening to people he shouldn't have and being far to willing to just shell out his finances for any project.

No way would I want him running a team.

well if the new york mets could develop their own soccer tams that could indeed put the mls in an entire new level- the millions of mets fans coull well support a mls team with imcomparable resources and , more with a fantastic impact in new york city, the nation biggest city with more than 22 million habitants...and, of course, in the country.
