I thought this might be a good thread to start the forum off and introduce those with prior military service.

I spent 3 years in the US Army from 89 -92. I was an artillery fire support specialist (13 FOX) or forward observer in the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment stationed in what was formerly W.Germany and was rotated to South West Asia for 8 months during Desert Storm. I graduated Ranger pre school (RIP) and was on track for jump school and Ranger school prior to my decision to opt out early after the war and go back to college.

No active duty for me, but I spent Junior High and High School in a D.O.D.D.S school overseas. I grew up with Military brats.

I was kept out for medical reasons. The people I know who served had some really cool stories from their time in.

4 years Active Duty as an AE in the Navy. Aviation Electrician. 2 years in the Army Reserve, same job really, aircrew 68L, 68Q, 68F.

In from 90-96

Almost went back in after 9/11, but decided to stay with the family. Was working at WPAFB as a contractor then.
I wouldn't trade my service time for anything. Got a great education and made quite a few friends.

It was very very tempting. Spoke with recruiters a number of times. Just couldn't do it though, not with the family.

A good friend of mine was a 13F during Desert Storm. Some of the pictures he brought back were...disturbing to say the least.

4 years in the Navy. Great place for single people. You develop some great friendships. The bs in the service during peace time was enough to help making up my mind not to re-enlist. Getting married added weight too. I too debated about returning after 9-11, but decided against it. If the war returns to within our shores, then there's no debate.

My best stories always involve me getting the shit kicked out of me by other Marines in various bars all over the world.

Maybe we know each other. :D

Kidding. I usually avoided the fights. I had more imporant things to do, like drink.

Pennsylvania Army National Guard, September '81 - September '83.

United States Air Force, September '83 - March '90. After basic and tech school, I spent three years at Hahn Air Base, Germany (Jan '84 - Jan '87) and the other 3+ years at Andrews AFB, Maryland.

I called a recruiter about rejoining on September 17th, 2001 (my wife and I were on vacation during 9/11) but the recruiter told me I was too old to re-enlist.

Wow, I am kinda surprised by that because of your prior service. Most times I thought that you had to be able to get your 20 in by a certain age if you were a prior service.

Just ********ing with you.I used to make fun of the Air Force guys until I realized when my unit was out in the field for 4 weeks sleeping on rocks the Air Force guys were all up in the club with the all the wives and girlfriends and if we came home early our NCO's would never ever let anyone show up unexpected at the crib. "Better to drop a dime than do time. :( :D

I served with General George Patton.

Of course, that was in a battle between the Carthaginians and the Roman legions two thousand years ago. Patton and me, past lives, military service - beats getting hit by a car and spending part of your formative years in traction and a body cast, as I did this time around, which tends to make you less appealing to the military for some reason.

(I have no past life experience. Just thought the Patton thing about reincarnation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Patton#Trivia) was fun). :)

USMC until an injury forced my medical discharge in 2003. They sent this "Broken Marine" back home. :(

Of course, I am married now, so I still have something that I voluntary signed up for that allows someone to order me to do things I don't want to do.

You know what the difference is between the Marine Corps and your wife though don't you?

After five years the Marine Corps still sucks. :D

Army ROTC, got the medical discharge first year of college after a nasty injury to my knee left me immobile for a while.

I always wished I could finish my training and go active duty. Of course not going opened some other opportunities for me, but still.
