Is this a jibe at English football...? Or you just don't think he will play. Because Derby County has an incredible amount of defenders and only 7 midfielders, of which several of them, Fielhaber already is a better playing ability than them. I have no doubt that if Fielhaber went to Derby he'd start at least 15 games for them (bar injury of course)

It is a swipe at English football. I believe guys who go there should either be the finished product or close to it.
There are relatively few clubs who actually improve young talent in England and Derby County isn't one of them.
I don't think Feilhaber is the finished product or close to it. But a couple of nice Gold Cup matches has everyone snowed......

Maybe you're right but I don't think he can resist the call to be honest. They're going to give him a nice, fat contract for a young player like him, and I think he'll want to prove himself in the Prem.

Agreed.
I find it hilarious, how many people latched on to the "goal strike" he made. Conveniently forgetting that in the previous game he nearly sent one out of the stadium.:p

EPL - where young players go to die (technically and tactically).
Dempsey made a bad move as well.

Exactly. If you see Otto Addo on the pitch for HSV, then HSV will have some serious problems......

I had heard Otto had signed with the club earlier this summer, but I was curious in what capacity.
Goal.com is reporting that Real Madrid are entering into negotiations for van der Vaart.

They want either Sneijder or Van der Vaart I think, so come on HSV... sell Van der Vaart

Sky was apparently reporting last night that Real had SIGNED Sneijder. However, I think if Schuster has his choice of the two, he'll want van der Vaart. van der Vaart is more experienced and has already competed in a higher league than the Dutch League.
Plus, I told you guys a little while ago that if Schuster couldn't get Kaka, he'd be coming for van der Vaart.
Actually, I wouldn't put it past Real to try to sign BOTH players...

I don't think Real will buy both players and I do think they'll steel Sneijder from us.
It's becoming a real Dutch side over there with Nistelrooij, Drenthe and maybe Robben, Sneijder or Van der Vaart.

It's about potential. His goal (but more importantly, his creative play) demonstrate that he could be a special player (at least insofar as US players go). That he skied one is irrelevant; even the best players scuff a chance every once in a while. Is he the finished product? Far from it. He makes too many mistakes right now. But unlike so many other US players, there is the lure of untapped potential, and the Gold Cup demonstrated that.
As for going to Derby, we'll see how it works out. After the Gold Cup, I felt that Feilhaber needed to play, and play a lot. He may get that opportunity at Derby, and he wasn't going to get that with Stevens (Feilhaber wasn't Stevens' signing, and my impression is that Stevens wasn't anxious to wait for a young player to develop), so in that respect, the transfer is a good thing. In a perfect world, Derby would not have been an ideal choice. Better would have been a good 2.BL team (Freiburg and Fuerth come immediately to mind, and a place like Gladbach might have been an option as well), a first division team in Holland (not the big three, but a lesser team--think Michael Bradley--clearly a more polished player than Feilhaber at this stage, largely owing I think to the playing time he has received in Holland--but if you watched the Gold Cup, you kind of got the sense that Bradley may be the next Claudio Reyna, which is nice, while Feilhaber could be the new and improved version of John O'Brien; guys like Reyna keep you in games; guys like O'Brien win those games), a first division team in Austria, or even a lower-level 1.BL team on a loan deal (Bielefeld comes immediately to mind, especially with Kauf hurt). But for now, I'm going to keep an open mind about this.

You won't hear me or others disagreeing with his potential. But, to ignore the rough edges in his game is just wrong. And he would have continued to develop with HSV as well and worked on that. This was more a jab at those who latch on to one thing and ignore other facets/flaws(or rough edges) of his game. Ever since he went to HSV I have been excited for the kid. And there are a few things to weigh here: playing time vs place to develop. I think a few of us are surprised that he did not at least go to another BL or BL2 team. Every player needs to have playing time..so that is kind of a no brainer. Didn't take a Gold Cup to tell me that. I would say he was developing better skills at a club/league where he would have better developed those skills I want to see in a midfielder, whereas if you are not in the top epl clubs, I just don't see those skills being developed as well. Personally, Feilhaber is already above Bradley. However, that is a matter of opinion and I think we would both like to see both players gel well together on the NT.
In the end, I always wish him the best of luck and as you said...better to keep an open mind.

His flaws are obvious; you saw it with HSV last year and you saw it with the US this summer: he makes too many mistakes, too many giveaways, too many ill-advised passes, I think he's a bit positionally naive, etc. The law of averages suggest that some of those are going to hurt your team. But these are things which can be ironed out. I hear what you're saying about a place to develop, but in my view, the best way to work on his flaws is to play the game, and preferably at a high level. The third or fourth division in Germany (I don't know where HSV's amateur team is playing this year) doesn't cut it, and I didn't foresee much of an opportunity for him to play for the big club. He's 20 or 21 years old, and at that age, it's less about the opportunity to develop and more about development itself, and playing is the best way to develop. That begs the question, though, of whether, as you very aptly point out, development is optimal playing for a Derby County team that will struggle to stay up, and will place a premium on results over development of its players. I think not, but as between the two options presented--HSV v. Derby, Derby is probably going to be better for him at this moment. Time will tell.
As for Bradley versus Feilhaber, I didn't suggest that Bradley is better than Feilhaber, just more polished (the rough edges you spoke of). Quite frankly, if I had to choose one to start, I'd choose Feilhaber, and not just based upon his potential but on the fact that I think he offers more now than does Bradley. I was fairly appalled that Bradley the Coach favored his son in the Gold Cup over Feilhaber. Like I said, Bradley's upside is Reyna-esque, while Feilhaber has a greater upside, but even now, if you want to play to win, Feilhaber's your guy.

do you's think there's much chance of real madrid getting van der vaart?

This year?
I'd say about zero chance.
Hamburg can't afford to lose him this late, and van der Vaart doesn't think that he is ready to play for a team like Real right now.
Next summer is a different matter. It's all but guaranteed that he will leave Hamburg after this season.

According to the news reports in the Netherlands, Valencia has made a 14M Euro offer that HSV has yet to respond to. However, I fully expect HSV to turn it down.
Especially since Real has signed Sneijder for a reported fee of 27M Euros. I don't see HSV taking less than 20M for vdV right now. I think that will be HSV's "schmerzgrenze" or "offer they can't refuse...."
Article On Supposed Valencia Offer For vdV - In German At Westline.de (http://www.westline.de/fussball/erste_liga/index_nachricht.php?file_name=187391&newsline=sportsline&catchline=fussball/erstebundesliga/news&article_count=1&word_count=555&page_type=index_nachricht.php&source=sid)
And for you guys adamant that HSV won't sell? You have to remember something. vdV has a clause in his contract that states he can leave after the 2009 season for 1.5M Euros.
Guess what? If he plays this entire season at HSV, bigger clubs can just wait one more season and sign him for that 1.5M. And the bigger clubs are known to pay players with such clauses a really nice bonus to not move until that clause kicks in.
I think if they don't sell this season, HSV stands to lose a lot of money on him.
Sell him if someone offers 20M and play Trochowski in the center.
We all know the club needs the money.
So I do believe HSV will have to listen to good offers now.
