I just saw one of the most incredible films ever. The movie is called "Aparajito" or "The Unvanquished". It's part of the Apu Trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray in the late 1950s. I got it from my mom, who'd been telling me to check it out for along time now, and it is a groundbreaking work. Kurosawa said about it, "I can never forget the excitement in my mind after seeing it. . . It is the kind of cinema that flows with the serenity and nobility of a great river". It's beautiful.
Doesn't hurt that the movie's premises, settings, and directors are Bengali, either :D . Nice to see a good movie out of India rather than the normal crap.

The only good Indian movies I've seen are Aan and Dev. Every other one I've seen was utter ish. In those movies the climax is about to happen and then there is some random-arse song to interrupt. I hate how there is singing and dancing every 10 minutes or so. I just want to see some action. Not to mention I can't understand Hindi and most Indian customs. I guess I'm ignorant but w/e.

Ray is one of those historic cinema greats. His Apu trilogy is always mentioned on any top films of all time lists.

I saw Ray's Pather Panchali a few years ago in a film class. Really great film.
I've liked some of the campy Indian films I've seen (not that I've seen all that many). Lagaan stands out recently, but it's VERY long and difficult to resist fast-forwarding through some of the singing and dancing.

Haha Sapph, I feel the same way. I like Lagaan, even though it pretty much has everything I hate about modern Indian film.

I just recently got my hands on a version of "Let It Be: The Movie." Has anyone else seen this?
In a part somewhere towards the middle their jamming on this one song and I swear I hear Lennon shout out "Matt Busby." Am I wrong? Has anyone else heard this?
This is a great documentary, btw.

Yeah, there is a reference to Busby in their Dig It recording. At the end of the song...

Thank you, thank you. :)
can't believe I'd see talk about Bollywood come up!
I dislike Indian films in general because they generally have the same plot plus the whole song and dance thing is HIGHLY annnoying.

Just an FYI...you can watch V for Vendetta on HBO On Demand right now. Very much worth it, one of the better movies out there

Some of the newer ones don't have that crap in them, thank God... I think "Black" is one like that.
The sad thing is how the dances aren't even Indian anymore, they are just MTV-style lights, backup singers, etc.

Yah...I can't remember the last good modern Indian film I've seen.
In regards to the dancing, I'd agree as well. It's all been very westernized.

I'll have to watch next time my relatives visit my parents. I've noticed a lot of the Hindi moves are very polished actually, with better acting. Southern Indian movies still remain true to form though - and not nearly as westernized.

Yeah, I have a Tamil friend from down South who never stops telling me about how the South Indian films are alot better than Bollywood. I haven't seen a film from down there, so I'll have to check one out.

I'd find out his definition of better :D
South Indians films, like I said, are more traditional. They don't stray from the roots. They'll have more slapstick comedy, more insanely unrealistic fight scenes, more true Indian style dancing, and the actors will be more conservatively dressed than Bollywood, and they won't *look* nearly as good (like polished or whatever)
FWIW - Bollywood actresses/actors are much like English footballers - they own the masses. And generally won't be found as much in Southern films. (Aishwarya - *drooool*)
My family is from Andhra actually, the rather large State to the North of Tamil.

Yeah, I'm Bengali so since Satyajit Ray's time, I haven't seen a good movie made by my people. Furthermore, when I was in Kolkata over the break, it seemed that they only watched Hindi films and English translated films. It was quite sad, our own film industry in the East is not doing well at all.
It is a bit insane how obsessed the Indian people are with Bollywood actors/film girls/guys, etc. When I was there, Aishwarya and Abishek Bachan were days from announcing their engagement, and people were simply going nuts about it.

Just saw the premier of Pirates 3 last night. It was well worth the $8.50 I paid. I definately want to see it again. Nonstop action and oodles of twists and turns. There are some parts that had me a bit lost and I was thinking WTF to myself for about 10 minutes in this one wierd-ass scene. But 2 hours and 50 minutes of swashbuckling action can't be topped. I rate it 5 stars. Not to mention Keira Knightley was DEAD SEXY!

Really?
Every single review I've read so far rips it pretty thoroughly. I'll probably see it just because.

Yeah you should definately see it. If you don't mind long movies with a few off the wall scenes then this is right for you. Not to mention a guy who sounded like Ricky Williams did the voice for some Persian pirate. Some critics just need to get a grip as it was clearly the best out of all 3 movies. There were many characters to keep track of but even a simple-minded person like myself could keep track of them all.
