I know, but that's no excuse compared to what the league used to be like and Scottish performances in Europe.

Where are all the great Scottish players who used to come down here? The national team is the worst in 30 years.

Population was not a problem in the 70's and 80's.

lots of factors are different now, in the 70's and 80's all weans had to do was go out and play football, not any more. If youll look under the old firm there is actually a fairly good set of young players coming through now that clubs are skint and have to develop these players, if most reach their potential then we will be back to a fairly respectable level I feel, i dont think were 60th in the world as it is, new zealand are ranked above us and dunfermline beat them preseason!

Do you think it will have a bearing now on the length of time O'Neill will stay on?

It might actually, the talk of a new deal for him has been long drawn out, the board might not take to kindly to his inability to learn from his mistakes in europe and he might not take to kindly to the board not letting him sign decent players.
We'll find out in the next few weeks I reckon.

It will improve, it has too, but right now the Scottish national team is the worst I've ever seen, and I'm only 22.

Imagine what it's like for people who've watched Scottish football since the 70's.

European football is the only way to judge how good Celtic and Rangers really are. Tonight was a disaster.

Of all years for Celtic to do this, they do it when the national team is on it's knees.

Yeah i agree.
O'neill has ambitions and i'm quite sure thats a lot of the reason he left the Foxes.
Ok..he had moderate success there wining the league cup, but it was really never fully contested untill the very late stages by any of the bigger teams.

Celtic are a massive club and i'm sure he thought he would be doing a bit of alright by moving up there and have loads of money to but a really strong team.

If the board won't release a lil of the money he may pack it in earlier than intended.

TPL makes a good point there about the "old Firm" playing on a par in Europe.

Which makes for the following matches in round three:

Tough as nails (based on relative strength, can't pick a winner):
Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) v Inter Milan (Italy)
Rosenborg Trondheim (Norway) v Brondby (Denmark)
Maccabi Haifa (Israel) v Sturm Graz (Austria)
Feyenoord (Netherlands) v Fenerbahce (Turkey)
Boavista (Portugal) v AJ Auxerre (France)
Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia) v Graz AK (Austria)

For the most part, correct. All close matches.

Pee in your pants, but the big(ger) teams should be ok:
AC Milan (Italy) v Slovan Liberec (Czech Republic)
Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) v Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine)
Partizan Belgrade (Yugoslavia) v Bayern Munich (Germany)
Genk (Belgium) v Sparta Prague (Czech Republic)
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) v Club Bruges (Belgium)
Celtic (Scotland) v FC Basel (Switzerland)

Spot on for Milan (just got thru on away goals) and Kiev. Bayern had correct result, but was hardly a nail biter. It was definitely time for Sparta, Shakhtar & Celtic to pee in their pants as all three were tied on aggregate but Sparta and Celtic go home on an away goal and Shakthar goes home on penalties.

Should be a blow-out:
APOEL Nicosia (Cyprus) v AEK Athens (Greece)
Barcelona (Spain) v Legia Warsaw (Poland)
Zeljeznicar Sarajevo (Bosnia) v Newcastle United (England)
Zalaegerszegi (Hungary) v Manchester United (England)

Correct for the Barco and the Uniteds (although ManU actually lost their first match), but both Athens matches were tight.

Overall though, I'd say you were pretty accurate with your predictions.

As for the away goal rule it's been around since the inception of European two leg ties.

Not true. It was only introduced circa 1967. This was a full decade after the European Cup was first played.
