In the light of the recent news (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=431106&cc=5901).

The G14, which represents 18 of Europe's most powerful clubs, hopes to double in size by the end of the year and open its doors to clubs across the continent, general manager Thomas Kurth said on Thursday.

The decision was made at a board meeting in Glasgow on Wednesday during which Olympique Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas was elected as G14 president following the departure of former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein.

I have never completely understood the point of G14. I know it is a group of the bigger, richer, better clubs in Europe, but what exactly do they do? Do they fight for the rights of the clubs and the players? Do they look out for the interests of the clubs involved? I know FIFA and UEFA aren't too fond of them, because they are paranoid about the potential departure from the Champions League to make a new tournament.

I know this is a lot of questions, but I have two more. What does Liverpool do for G14? What does the G14 do for Liverpool? Thanks in advance for all the questions, I just don't have a clear view on all the political going-ons over in Europe and in World football.

Its original 14 members (the eponymous G14) were arranged in 4 tiers with Real Madrid at the top due to its number of European Cup/Champions League trophy wins.

Tier 1: Real Madrid, AC Milan, Ajax, Liverpool

Tier 2: Juventus, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan

Tier 3: Barcelona, Manchester Utd, Borussia Dortmund, PSV Eindhoven

Tier 4: Porto, Marseille, Paris St-Germain

A fifth tier was in 2002:

Tier 5: Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Lyon, Valencia

Its stated aims are:

To promote the cooperation, amicable relations and unity of the member clubs.

To promote and improve professional football in all its aspects and safeguard the general interests of the member clubs.

To promote cooperation and good relations between G-14 and FIFA, UEFA and any other sporting institutions and/or professional football clubs, paying special attention to negotiating the format, administration and operation of the club competitions in which the member clubs are involved.

One of the things it did was to push for each country to have a certain number of clubs in European competitions based on there winning percentage of European trophys. For LFC this means we can finish top 4 and be in.
They fought our corner after we won and ended up 5th.
They won't allow Chav$ki to join.
