View Full Version : Carlos Tevez vs. Wayne Rooney

I think the old thread got locked but the Man. United vs. West Ham game today seemed to sum up the conclusions most people had from that thread, mainly that Tevez is the more clinical finisher while Rooney is the superior athlete (exemplified by his nonstop workrate and how quickly he chased Tevez down to stop a west ham counterattack).
Ultimately, it's pointless to say which is the better player as it really depends on what style of play one prefers (Rooney is the favorite if it's the rougher EPL style while Tevez would feature better than him in the more technical styles of play seen in Serie A and La Liga).
But both are quality young stars who play with the hunger of true champions.

Both have not achieved anything significant on international level, i would give Tevez the over hand. If he played with a better team he would be doing extremely well.
Rooney? Well my personal opinion of him is that he is overrated by the English media like tons of other English players.

wut? Rooney would quite likely have been the top scorer of Euro 2004 if he hadn't got injured (which probably would've been enough to see England through against Portugal in a match that was decided by penalties).
Rooney may be overated by the English media but he is still damn good. His performance against Milan exemplifies this.

That might be the case but Rooney is proppeled into messiah type of player by the media something which is not true.
You have players like, Henry, Eto'o, Ruud, Shevchenko and Villa in oneplace then you have players like Rooney, Gilardino, Adebayor, Defoe, Crouch .. 2 completely different classes.

I don't really get your point here as you haven't really defined what you mean by "place" and those groupings seem to be a bit random.
Henry and Eto'o are immense - no questions asked. Scheva can't fit in with the best squad in the world. Ruud narrows a club's options and I don't know much about Villa.
Rooney is debateably up there with the best. Gilardinho is overated, Adebayor doesn't really get much media attention so I'd probably call him underated. Defoe and Crouch get battered by the media.
Clarify, please.

Rooney was the joint second top goal scorer in Euro 2004 (on four goals with Van Nistelrooy) and was named in the team of the tournament. During the tournament he became youngest scorer in European Championship finals history (record now held by Johan Vonlanthen). I would call that significant. He also has three times the number of goals that Tevez has, despite the latter being the more clinical finisher.

Tevez has played well but Rooney better. There are numerous reasons for that but if you wish to highlight the good play of Tevez you must do likewise for Rooney. Despite his poor play at the start of the season when recovering from his pre-WC injury, Rooney has had his best ever season in terms of goals/assists.

I disagree and many others will do likewise. How much of Rooney have you seen and what do you consider his position to be?

LOL... Rooney in a season plagued by poor form for him has outperformed everyone on the first list. Every single, one of them. How Villa gets into that list I'm not sure. You've got proven vets on that list and then just throw Villa on. I'm a big Villa fan but he's had 2 good years. Hell, Rooney's had 3.

4 goals, 2 against Switzerland and another 2 against Crotia. That is hardly something to messure greatness with because IIRC, Milan Baros managed to score 5 goals.
He scored a hattrick against PSV i think but since then has a drought in the Champions League.
You can't sersiouly be comparing Tevez in West ham against Rooney in Manchester United. He team that is firing on all cylinders against a team that avoided relagation just yesterday.

Tevez is playing for horrible team while Wayne Rooney is playing for the league champions so comparing their stats wouldn't make sense.

It was against Fenerbache (sp?). He's scored quite a bit recently in the Champions League. :)
This is an unanswerable argument until Tevez actually plays for a big club.

Eto'o was out 7 month with a injury, Henry has been plauged by injury all season and the fact that would even notian that Rooney is better then Henry just ruins it for you. Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the Spanish League top scorer with 21 goals and has so far scored 29 Goals for Real Madrid this season. Outperformed? I think not. These 3 players are certainly better then Wayne Rooney. David Villa & Shevchenk are not having the best season i'll admit that but both are better IMHO.
I'm not saying that Wayne Rooney is shiite player but i am saying that these players ARE better then him.

Schevchenko isn't just having a poor season he's having an awful season. He shouldn't even start for his club.

They're both fantastic players, I'd take either at Chelsea, little between them if you ask me, hopefully next season we will finally have a more accurate barometer for comparison.
The whole "Ruud limits what club can do" comment was silly. He doesn't limit them from scoring goals, he is a striker, that's his job, and it isnt if he is a technical or skillful mess either.

Ya, I was trying to think of a way to make Ruud seem worse. Isn't easy.

I disagree. It seems we've become too accustomed to having everything be about the easy money now in sports. What I'd like to see is Tevez stay at West Ham and create a Maradona/Napoli type of legacy with them. This would be something rare that could catapult him into the ranks of all-time status, as opposed to simply following the conventional road of becoming another name in a long list of big club champions (which Rooney has become after leaving Everton).
With that said, I truly think Tevez is one of the few current players that could create an inspiring story like that. He just seems to have an aura about him that defies the odds despite not being as skilled as the likes of Ronaldinho or Kaka.

Clarify, please.Gilardino has been crap for two seasons. Ever since he left Parma, he hasn't been the same player. If you saw Gila in his Parma days, he was amongst the best in thw world, not just Serie A. He needs to leave Milan if his career is to be back on track.

Despite his poor play at the start of the season when recovering from his pre-WC injury, Rooney has had his best ever season in terms of goals/assists.Rooney has been influential for Man U this season but he has also has the pleasure of also having two great wingers in C Ronaldo and Giggs. West Ham were going nowhere but when it mattered most, Tevez managed to lift his teammates and win games by himself. Bobby Zamora wasn't going to rescue West Ham, only Tevez could. Rooney can win games for Man U but if it's not him, C Ronaldo or Giggs will. If Tevez can't win a match for West Ham, nobody else will. The only time we can properly analyse the performances (even the talents) of the two players is if they play for the whole season with some consistency but Tevez must be given credit for saving West Ham's backside.

Yeah, that's where I saw him the most. I barely watch Serie A these days but I've heard he's been atrocious.

Tevez carried that useless West Ham team on his shoulders. He's adapted very quickly to a new league and culture, which can only be a measure of the man's talent.
