I've been trying to learn a little about him. I was just wondering things like what his strengths were as a player, at what club was he most successful, was he part of Arsenal's famous backline, or anything else. Thanks for any responses.

When David Platt was at Arsenal he was played as a central midfielder. I didn't really rate his passing or tackiling much (amazing when you consider he played for Juventus!), but he could really time his runs into the box and get on the end of things. I think he scored over 20 goals for England, so that says much about his goalscoring ability. His knack for being in the right place at the right time is a quality that many a striker would be proud of. I'm not sure where you got the idea that he may have been part of the back line, he never played in defence in his life.

Yes he did. He partnered Tony Adams in central defense in EURO 96. That's where I got the idea.

Oooopps. You're right. My mistake. For some reason I mixed the two up when thinking about it.

That was a fun team to watch, with Gazza (who had an amazing goal against Scotland), Macca and Ince. AND ESPN showed the whole tournament live.

Platt was a great player, but his contribution at the Arse was not a lot. He made his name for England while at Villa, got signed by Bari in Italy, then played for Sampdoria (when they were good, he also coached them for about 5 games), and Juve, before going back to Samp, then Arse. he played for two of Italy's top clubs when English players weren't rated by continentals (no change there then), so he was a bit of a novelty.

Euro 96 was on live on ESPN (with full SportsCenter highlights), MLS was just starting, USMNT was starting to get regular TV time, FA Cup Final was on tape delay on Fox Sports Net and there was Monday Night (Premiership) Football on ESPN. Good times, good times.

The 96 England team was a very good side (Shearer was at his peak, and possibly the best striker in the world at the time) but we were helped in that tournament by a few things - home advantage for one, a couple of questionable calls in our favour against Spain in the QF. And we still didn't manage to win.
I was at the Scotland game - I'll never forget Gazza's goal. One of the finest pieces of skill I've ever seen and against the Auld Enemy as well. Class.
But Euro 96 was more or less the end of David Platt's England career, and he didn't really put in any outstanding performances in the tournament.

I was 8 when that goal was scored and it is one of my earliest and fondest football memories. Just thinking about it now makes me feel kinda funny, like when i used to climb the rope in gym class.

Classic?
To small a word for it.
Remember the match going into extra time and past my official bedtime. Was allowed to stay up and with 1 minute of extra time to go - he did that fantastic spin volley thing.
Still gives me chills thinking about it. (other 2 goals that do that - Lineker equalising in SF '90 and Pearce scoring his penalty against Spain in '96).
Overall, Platt was a good man to have in the side. Relatively solid with a certain something extra.
England side 1990 plus England side 1996 - average it out and you've got yourself a hell of a team.

Euro 96 England team looked something like this:
------------------Seaman---------------------
---Neville------Adams----Southgate----Pearce---
------------------Ince--------------------------
----McManaman---------------------Anderton---
-------------------Gazza------------------------
----------Shearer-------------Sheringham--------
Right?
Pretty good team. I always hear about McManaman not fitting in with England, but he seemed to fit in pretty well with them at this tournament. Gascoigne had a good tourney as well, right? Shearer was fantastic. Anything else really special about this team?
What did the 90' team look like?

4-1 over Holland was pretty special.
And whilst the names on the field weren't perhaps showstoppers - they seemed to click.

This will give you various figures about the squad (http://www.englandfootballonline.com/CmpWC/CmpWC1990Squad.html)
And to all those who enjoy having discussions about the awfulness of the English keeper situation - keep an eye out for a certain Mr Dave Beasant - in the England team. It doesn't get much worse than that - you see why we're not too fussed at the moment?

Thanks for the info.
I've read many places that people agree that these players never fit in with England.
1. Steve McManaman
2. Robbie Fowler
3. John Barnes
True? Strange that they were all Liverpool players.

Odd, but then there were loads of players that never properly fitted in - it's just these stick out a bit further.
1 and 2 certainly, for whatever reason. But from a personal point of view I've not fully understood why so many think Barnes didn't really fit in. True he wasn't an ever present but in my memory, when he was there, I never had the feeling of dread I get whenever Heskey's name is mentioned. He had more good moments than his England reputation would suggest. IMO.

Right?
Anderton was on the right wing with Macca on the left.
