Which category do you feel you fall into on a whole, and why?

I would also like to ask those who lurk or are readers, who are good posters on Bigsoccer outside of this board. Recommended posters, if you will. I wouldn't mind reading some in-depth works, they seem sparse overall these days. Is that my myopia or do others feel that way as well?

Now that the season's over (pretty much except for the cups) I wouldn't mind compiling a body of work from other people to read through away from our board. Where's a good place to start on BS?

Can't help with the latter part but I've changed from someone who used to read and lurk alot with the odd longer post into someone who posts more but most of 'em are messing about.

You people are a bad influence. :p

All of the above really.

Depending on my mood or topic of conversation (how strongly I feel about subject/or not), I probably go through all those phases from week to week.

More of a reader, laziness on my part really, the style this forum has of shoving everything into one thread means I can't be bothered to go through pages to find a reply to something I said etc:p

Is it ironic that this very thread has 4posts and 50views?

I've been big on posting and messing abaht, but recently w/ my new job I've not been posting as much and have read/lurked a lot more than usual.

All 4, I guess.
I'm probably considered one of the (plethora) jokers. I like messin abaht, but I read most of what is posted or else I wouldn't have anything to joke about. I usually lurk when something "catastrophic" happens because I know that in the morning things will well be different (except when I wanted Ricardo to get a shot over Carroll, after the Tottenham phantom goal). Plus, some of the other views can help to calm me down. I don't post as much as a lot of yous, but lately I couldn't help getting into the jovial spirit. I wrote a long-ish piece in the "Favourite Things of this season" and will once in a while when I feel passionate about something (like D.Jones getting a shot).

Hi all.

I is all about the messin' abaht, yo, cuz I is proper like that.

In terms of what else I read on BS, I spend a good portion of my time on the Newcastle board because they're generally a fun bunch with an honest opinion about their club. They don't just go slagging you off as a troll if you support another club.

As far as the types of posts you seem to be into, I'm not really sure I've seen other places outside this board where people get into that sort of thing. I suppose I could wax philosophical about life and such if you get bored. ;)

Definitely mostly a lurker/reader. Athough football/soccer is now my favorite sport, I did not grow up following it so my knowlege is not that deep and I do not want to sound stupid. As a result I do not post that often. I do visit the site most days and I do read most of DS's posts, unless they are over 50,000 words. I am learning and I do appreciate DS's and others' efforts to have an intelligent dialogue.

I mostly visit this forum so I cannot recomend other posters. I do think there are some serious posters in the U.S. National Team's forum, but the subject matter is not that interesting to me.

That's the way it works, I'm afraid. The vast majority of people who reply to this thread will be names that you recognise, purely because they are the ones who reply to threads like these. You also have to remember that the viewcount will (I presume) go up even if the person viewing has already replied and is checking other peoples' reponses - like you just did, for example. Or maybe some of those views are from people who don't feel inclined to post on the Man Utd board, even in a thread like this.

I read a lot of what goes on here but I tend not to post all that often on team-related issues. That's partially because (in general, not just on BS) I don't like giving an opinion on something unless I feel that I can justify it in-depth and state a case if someone disagrees, on my own terms. For example, when the 'best player of all time' debates arise I might have an idea/bias towards certain players over others, but since I'm fully aware that they're not intellectually honest opinions - I'm basing them largely off second-hand information from people like yourself, lanman, Gregoriak, etc. and I haven't seen enough footage of enough of them to have formed my own ideas - I keep them to myself. They're worthless, and I know that, and that's alright. All I can do is learn. I see plenty of people spouting off on things that they know nothing about, and I don't want to be one of them. (Incidentally, you can see why I took such an interest in the All-Time Draft last year). The point of the digression is that I don't feel that I've seen enough Man Utd games outside highlights to have formed my own in-depth opinions re: tactics, etc., so I don't add to those debates. I do follow them however, absorbing what I think is useful Peter Petrelli-style ;)

Another reason for holding off on team issues is that while I'm not a huge fan of the convention on BS that everyone sticks to their 'own' team's forum, with fans of rival teams ripped to shreds regardless of what they're saying, I understand that for a lot of people that sense of community is why they're here. It's a pretty pervasive phenomenon, and it dissuades me from posting on some other teams' fora where the regulars aren't as friendly as you guys are. The Spurs board are an honourable exception; Liverpool (boo, hiss) aren't too bad either.

I guess that leaves me mainly as a reader/messin' abahter. This board has a good cameraderie, which shouldn't be understated.

Regarding recommended posters, you're not being myopic. I used to love the Beautiful Game forum as a place where the likes of Gregoriak, argentine soccer fan, comme & tpm - people who actually know what they're talking about - would have intelligent and detailed discussions that were a godsend to someone like myself who would never have heard of someone like Alex James or Charro Moreno if not for them. That aspect of the forum has dramatically declined in the last year or two, for whatever reason, without newer 'knowledgable' posters coming forward to pick up where they left off. A poster named Tribune had some good contributions to a Zidane thread in the 'Players & Legends' section a few days ago, but I haven't checked where else he posts. The BG subforums have some interesting threads, but the main section has gone some way down the same road as the main UEFA forum - lots of people talking loudly about things they know little about.

That's the biggest change in this site over the years. Sadly. Not many waffling on about the game itself anymore. :(

And feel free to tell me about the book of Zinn, I'm sure I'll take some life lessons from your sermons. :D

That's quite interesting. I was born around football and don't follow any other sport with anything more than a passing interest. I find it hard to 'care' enough to get into anything else in the way I'm into footy, so I guess I can relate.

I was following American pointy ball and BBall for a time, but turns out it was a fad. :o

It's a fine balance for me. When I'm not posting seriously I mess about, which is fun becuase we have several fun people here and the appropriate NSR related forum.

In any event, in terms of non-United football, I spent a lot of time reading over the Germany forums which I would recommend - there's practically no trolling there, and a lot of knowledgeable posters like Gregoriak, footyfan, and BogartzundRivera.

I try to read everything in the United forum and post when I feel its warranted. I lurk sometimes, but typically only when its a slow day and there is nothing really going on. I should probably try to inititate more but I'm a counter-puncher by nature. I very rarely mess abaht, or even about.

That's an interesting take on things. You'd be surprised with how many people I speak to agree with you on that.

I have found the reason why I myself post so many in-depth threads on this board is because I've cut out wasting my time arguing with people elsewhere, but I've also found that even when I want to have a good read of lenghthier posts/debates it's hard to find good ones going on. Instead I find myself re-reading the old top quality threads from the BG forum.

No one rebutting Tribune's post was a prime example of how things have changed in that regard.

I'd suggest you have a mosey in the Brazil forum. I haven't been there for a while, but it used to be one of the best on the site and I'd assume it still is.

I like to read differing philosphies on the game. Haven't done so in a while, so do hope I can over the summer. I've got two or three pieces I want to write then that'll be it for me for a few months with regard to that.

Mostly lurk and read....don't have the will power to form a coherent argument most of the time. Alot of times i'll disagree with someone, but then again, arguing on the internet is kind of retarded.

best posters: DS of course, Sir Manc would be up there if his presentation wasn't akin to Jim Rome's

Yeah, even in my short time here there seems to have been a shift in the style of posts, which someone like me certainly doesn't help. Really though, this is still the best messageboard I've seen on the net pertaining both to the sport and United.

And feel free to tell me about the book of Zinn, I'm sure I'll take some life lessons from your sermons. :D

Oh the wisdom I could impart on your mind. Recently, I decided that from now on I'm only going to make sandwiches with one piece of bread folded hot dog style. I still put the same amount of mayo and meat though, which means that I'm getting much less bread and much more meat. I quite like this because the bread is really only there to hold the meat and the mayo, which are the parts everyone wants to eat anyway. I'm working on getting rid of the bread completely.

Would you like to hear about my showering technique?
