I think back to when the only international football I was able to watch was the World Cup (pre FSW and FSC). I really knew nothing about club football aside from the occassional mention of AC Milan amongst fellow italians in my area. When I discovered FSW I digested every EPL match I could get my eyes on. I would even re-watch matches I knew the result of just because I was so obsessed with the fact that I could now watch football 10 months out of the year instead of 2 months every 4 years. I remember watching Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, & United more than most other teams and I was immediately attracted to United's style of play. I began to support them even though I was slowly discovering that people that knew nothing about football knew United because they were the "yankees of europe". I guess it just bothers me that when people in public see me in my kit they talk to me like I know nothing about the game and ask me if i knew that "beckham plays for United" (this comment was made about 3 months ago) and that United apparently "has a different kit and sponsor for every competition they play in" (heard that one last week.) I'm just curious how everyone else here (outside of people living in Manchester) came to support United. I began to support United because I felt it in my heart and I knew they were my team when a United loss would ruin my day or week. I'm knew to the board and just looking to meet some new people.

Welcome to BigSoccer and welcome to the United forum.
George Best came to play in San Jose when I was 9 years old. You could say that he made an impression on me....

I don't support United. I support Ronaldo. Because Ronaldo plays for United, I hope they win. When he leaves for Madrid, so will I.:)

but then i saw some PL highlights. saw arsenal trounce southampton 5-0 or that might have been later but i decided to watch more PL after that and I saw United play some nice attacking stuff and i loved it so here i am 10+ years later

My Grandfather (who is also the reason for my Supporting of Portugal) had me down as a Man Utd Fan before i really knew much at all, he was always buying me shirts and posters and even a Man utd Bed quilt when i was little, we bonded over football and that bond lives on even now without him. I plan to make it a family tradition :p If it werent for him i'd probably be following some ************ australian sport like AFL and for that i thank him the most.

I started playing the game at the age of four and loved it, not just as an energy expenditure like most House level kids did back then, but as a game that I really enjoyed. I really had no idea about anything other than my own games until my dad talked to a neighbor of mine who happened to be a relocated Manc. He'd been a United supporter since he was a little boy and let me watch a bunch of tapes of some of the big games that he had, and told me what channel I could watch games on (on delay, of course) so I would be up at 7 in the morning to watch every game (not much has changed, I suppose...). At that time I liked United, and also watched a lot of games that had Juve, Everton, Lazio and Parma in them, as they seemed to be televised a lot in my area. He even instilled a healthy dislike of scousers into me, as I looked up to him like a second father and wanted to do everything he did. :D

I'll quote the calypso:
Football is the greatest game,
It's played in the sun, it's played in the rain
And the team that gets me excited?
Manchester United!
My old man was a bit of a United fan when I was a kid, he loved Ince, Cantona and later, Yorke and Cole. I used to watch the games with him, and it just grew on to me. Started watching United with or without him, and it started mattering to me, very much indeed. Then my cousin gave me the collared Cantona kit and it was a done deal. By '98 I was fully into it, crying after losses and all that :)
