View Full Version : The Eight Logos that need to go!

The Eight MLS Logos that need to go, in no particular order:
- Columbus. The logo was funny when it debuted and it's still just as goofy today. The only thing right with it is the shield shape - after that you're looking at a photograph of three guys from N'Sync modeling hats from Toys-R-Us.
- New England. This logo is done in a style that would be great for advertising an art fair or a charity walkathon. But a soccer logo it's not.
- Metrostars. It's...a cartoon of a building blowing up.
- San Jose. The soccer ball rises over the horizon. Is that to remind us which game we're playing? It's a step up from the old Clash scorpion but we're still not there yet.
- Kansas City. A logo that looks like a scratch-n-sniff sticker stuck on an elementary schoolgirl's Trapper Keeper.
- Colorado. Looks like an advertisement for a ride at a theme park. Huge and shapeless. Or there's the alternate logo - it's a...soccer ball. Did they stay up all night coming up with that one?
- Dallas. I reckon one of the horses has touched the electric fence and started vomiting. The NFL's Texans came up with a great name and logo. Why does MLS always get the "B" team marketers?
- Los Angeles. "Honey, come quick - junior's flushed the phone down the toilet again".
Those are the big eight. DC and Chicago? Nice job.

Couldn't agree with you more. The two logos I can't believe are still in existance the most are the Metrostars' and New England's. You hit the nail on the head with the Metrostars', it looks like a building blowing up. With last years terrorist attacks that logo needs to go now! Come on Metrostars, get something right for once. And New Englands' flag logo is equalling sickening. Our flag holds new meaning, it shouldn't be mocked as bad logo. Lets get that changed immediately as well. I've always said New England should just use the shield the Night Riders have or something similar. As for Dallas, they had a second logo durring the first year of the league. It was a horses head and wings as if you were looking at it from straight ahead. It looked so much better than the current horse with heartburn. As for Colorado, they also need to loose the Robert Redford, " a River Runs Through It" logo. Again, if they just used their second logo of the soccer ball it would be so much better. I know it doesn't show much creativety but at least its not stupid like their current one. And Los Angeles should either drop their logo all together or replace the golf ball with a soccer ball.

How about a wheel with a wing? A blue star? A native american chief? Two letters in white? The letter "T" The head of a bird, an entire bird, two birds on a branch, a deer, a shield with wings on it, or the letter "G," or the letter "C." What about an insect? A French Fleur de Lise? A letter with a halo around it? My favorite is the number of the player, and my second favorite is...a white space divided by a black line.
Thank Nike because a Nike focus group is responsible for almost all of them.

Woa big fella, Colorado's logo might just be the worst one out there right now. Well no, the Metrostars is the worst one, but Colorado's is the second worst. If you were to show it to someone who was not familiar with sports and asked them what sport that team played they would have no idea. It doesn't have anything to do with soccer. Its the word Rapids with a river and some rocks. It is a better logo for a river rafting company. I like Colorado's name, I like their green uniforms, but I think 99 percent of soccer fans would say that logo has to go.

Sweet merciful crap, I don't think we've ever seen this topic before.

This topic will only go away once the bad logos go away. We bitched and moaned until the shootout was killed off, hence we must bitch and moan until the bad logos are killed off.

So because you think that the logos are bad and must be killed off, that automatically means that that's The Truth and The Way It Should Be?
Sorry, I don't remember getting that memo.

Do you actually like the Burn's logo, Dustin?

It wouldn't be my first choice.
But at this point, I'm used to it. A new logo wouldn't make me any happier or make the team on the field any better or improve my life or affect me in the slightest way.
So no, I'm not about to join the MLS Logo Jihad. I've got much bigger Burn-related issues on my mind than the logo.

Moreover, the whole concept of some knucklehead saying "these logos are good and must be kept" and "these logos are bad and must be jettisoned" strikes me as a bit arrogant.
I mean, what if someone happens to think, as I do, that the DC United logo looks like it should be painted on the hood of a 1978 Firebird?

Just because DC's logo looks like it should be painted on a Firebird doesn't mean it sucks. Smokey and the Bandit was a funny movie in its day. The only thing DC has changed on their logo was to make the wings go up instead of down. That way it wouldn't look like something out of Hitler's Nazi government. And they have also added stars after all their Cup victories. I think Dallas should do this, come up with two or three new logos and then have fans comming to the games durring the year vote on their favorite. They should do it all year so the fans paying the most money and comming to the most games have the most say. Put the current logo on the ballot as well and if it is the most liked it will win. However, at the same time I will drive down to Vegas and bet my life savings on the current logo loosing.

I think the real question should go beyond a purely objective evaluation of the aesthetic properties of the logo, and ask the question: "Will this logo help or hinder sales of replica jerseys and other team-related items?"
If the answer is "Yes - people support this team, but no one seems to want to buy all the items we're selling with the 'big bag of french fries' logo plastered everywhere", then I think it's fair to consider replacing the existing logos.
Once upon a time they purportedly dropped NY/NJ from the name of the MetroStars, and once upon a time they were purportedly going to phase out the logo and ephasize the name alone until they could phase in a new, hopefully better logo (though that initiative seems to have stalled). The league has to recognize that is shot itself in both feet when it left the gate in 1996, and it's still trying to recover. Expunging some of the earlier mistakes with better solutions should be encouraged, and that includes the logos - and heck, maybe even the names as well.

I agree, but I'm losing no sleep over it. I say behind DC and Chicago, our logo is next best. Although the Rapids logo with the soccer ball should be their main one, it's less cheesey. To each their own, and I'm sure in 10-15 years the Crew logo will be the same, and be a notable identity for Crew soccer.
It's really not that bad, except some no talent hacks called the Village People showed up, and a few morons were born that try to link them to the Crew.
