The most valuable player is whoever is the most coveted by the clubs with shedloads of money.
Has someone pointed out yet that monetary value isn't necessarily indicative of a player's quality?

Eto'o
Amazing only one person so far has mentioned Samuel Eto'o. Forwards tend to command the highest fees and as Eto'o is one of the best in the business - he's got to be one of the highest valued players around. Perhaps Cameroon's absence in the last world cup and his injury plagued last season may have seen his value drop a bit but he's got to be on the list somewhere. He's only 26 and won 3 African Player of the Year awards in a row.
The player who replaced him with that award, Didier Drogba should also be on the list although he's older, 29.... but as I said earlier, goalscorers tend to command higher prices

In no particular order and definitely not based on financial value, here is my 8:
1. Gerrard - Up to this point he has been Liverpool to the bone. He is also a good example of proffesionalism and a pretty damn good midfielder.
2. Riquelme - What he's done this past term for BOCA and recently Argentina in the Copa are amazing. Including his original term with BOCA, he is arguably the clubs most important player ever. His ability to raise the level of Villarreal is also commendable.
3. John Terry - A solid example of what a captain is. An excellent defender for both club and country and again arguably the best CB in the world today.
4. Kaka' - I think this goes without saying.
5. Giggs - In my eyes the classic example of a proffesional in every facet of the word. Club and country loyalty that is rare these days. Sublimely skilled and to me stands out on a squad of studs and near studs.
6. Totti - I don't like him but he really is Roma and without him he'd be missed.
7. Ronaldinho - The face of world futbol.
8. Nesta - Best defender in SerieA? Up there with Terry as the best CB's in the world.

What has Robinho done to be on this Top 8, let alone ahead of RvN, Ronaldinho, Huntelaar?
Surprised you put Aguero in there instead of Messi. (I wouldn't put either of them here, but if given the choice, Messi would probably be the choice of most)
