Anyone here planning to get this, due in stores today (although I've heard that in some places, it was already on shelves yesterday)?
I'm tempted to purchase this 2-disc set, but somehow I feel that I should wait until the 4-disc set hits shelves in October/November. What do you think?

I think I'm going to wait until the 12-disc set for all three movies comes out in 2004.

I picked it up last night, that and Supertroopers.
I was getting some snacks for this weekends paintball tournament in Sams Club when I mosied on over to the DVD section. They had both movies on the shelves already so I picked them up.
I'm just glad to watch LOTR again, my experience in the theatre was not so great, but I love the movie.

Just curious, but are you guys planning to buy the extended version in November as well? My hunch is that in years to come, that will become the "standard" version.
I'm planning on renting this one to see the extras, but then buying the 4 disc set in November.
As for a future 12 disc box set of all three movies. Is that speculation or already a known reality?

I think it's safe to assume there WILL be a boxed set, 12 discs was just a guess based on the 4 disc version of Fellowship, thinking about it a little more I guess it'll probably be more like 8.

I am getting the two disc version, but only because of the Blockbuster rental deal. I was going to wait for the 4 disc version, but...
Now I need to decide if I want the 4 disc version this winter (probably), or if I'll hold out for the presumed box set coming after the 3rd film.

After further research, I found that it may pay to get both versions!
Apparently, Peter Jackson wanted to release a six-disc set that included the theatrical version of the film, the director's cut version with 30 minutes of added footage, and tons of other goodies. They soon figured out that almost no one would buy a six-disc set (imagine the price!), so they broke it up into two sets: the two-disc set and the four-disc set. Neither will have material that the other has (or so I hear). The official reason, of course, is that they didn't want the fans to have to wait for the movie itself while Peter Jackson is still finalizing the director's commentary and other stuff.
In any case, if you can afford it, it would pay to get both the two-disc set, and either the four-disc set or the Collector's Set (which includes the four-disc set, plus other stuff). :)

If you don't have the cash for the movie but can get yourself to a kia dealer this might interest you. You can get a free copy of LOTR on DVD or VHS by test driving a kia vehicle. Go to their website and look towards the bottom of the page for more details. http://www.kia.com

I've had it on bootleg VCD - pretty decent quality, too - for a number of months. I love broadband!

One interesting thing from the extras:
Peter Jackson says the november dvd release will include a new version of Fellowship, with 30 minutes of deleted scenes, new music, etc. Looks like one big scene will be the "gifts from Galadriel" bit that was so prominently missing in the theatrical release.

Saw that. The added scenes look awesome. I think my mind is made up.
Of course, my soon-to-be-wife was all like "we're going to have TWO copies of that movie?!?" I didn't have the heart to tell her it's more likely there will be three (a big-ol' box set as well). :)
