Who is this Schuler kid? He seems to be getting around his man pretty easily. Is he good technically?

Per Matchtracker, the first goal came from the run of play, the second sounds like it was a heads up play by Bates to take a set piece that didn't work and make a goal out of it.

Certainly sounds like the US is dominating from the match tracker - not that us soccer would be biased in their description or anything. ;)

Although, if the statistics are accurate, it's hard to argue with 8-1 shots for the USA and 5 of those on target. Or the 2-0 scoreline for that matter.

Very true. And 7-2 in corners as well.

2nd half on, Canada gets a goal to cut it to 2-1. Match tracker says the US still in control and playing confidently - not sitting back.

US wins 2-1, now on 6 points with a +4 GD.

If I'm not mistaken if Jamaica and T&T lose their next game (they play CR and CAN respectively) we've clinched qualified.

All we need is one point and we are through. We can also qualify before we play if Canada draw T&T (match takes place before ours on Friday).

ps-- there's a very good write up on the match over at ussoccer.com.

I love hearing the post game summaries where they talk about the US playing an attractive brand of soccer, and still having success. Each year it seems the style or brand of soccer that we play with our youth teams improves. Maybe Hackworth isn't as rough around the edges as many of you feel he is. He seems to be imploring his teams to knock the ball around and attack with numbers and style much more than Ellinger did. I'm really excited to see how this team progresses through the next several months and into Korea.

There do some to be some interesting players in this batch, even though I've only seen snippets. Nimo looks like a potential beast, as do McLoughlin and Williams.

I agree...also from all reports the 2 GK's are top class. Lambo is rumored to be heading to Everton after the world cup (an everton scout supposedly called him as good as any youth keeper he had ever worked with), and MacMath seems to be every bit as good considering he is currently the one in net for the qualification games.

He certainly seems to be trying. I have been giving him the benefit of the doubt because of what I have heard about him.

It can't be good that he had the Ellinger albatross hanging over his head.

I still will remain more cycnical than not about US youth coaches until they show they can play ball with the heavyweights in the youth world.

I'm not talking baout having to win, but playing with them the way they do.

Haven't seen that yet.

As you've stated many times here I don't think we can see small incremental improvements when we do play with the big boys. Last year was the first time I saw our youth team have comparable talent and for long stretches look comfortable on the ball and move and play.
U-20's vs Argentina. First half we looked very good skill wise. The goal had 4 very good touches with Barret, Dalby, and Feilhaber all getting the ball to Wynne for a good not great cross. A few times we had back to back heel flicks with Gaven and Adu and Sturgis doing that wirhly spin move twice from Central Defense. The 2nd half different story when Messi came in and we just bunkered.
U20's vs Germany we dominated them and Gaven missed 2 great opportunities. Very good skill on the ball.
U17's vs Italy. We played with Hustle AND skill
U17's vs Holland. Again similar to the U-20s First half played with them but 2nd half we did not have the ball skill as we did in 1st half
We are making improvements and think upcoming cycles will do better and with USSF Top 60 club initiative and MLS team acadamies, I hope to see faster incremental improvement.

Brazil and Spain are my benchmarks. They always make us look bad, at every age group. One of 'em (can't remember which) smoked the Adu/Spector/Gaven/Szetela U17 squad. I remember thinking we had a team that could go toe to toe with anybody, and then I realized it couldn't.

If we can play either of those teams and have something near 50% of the ball, now we're in the big time.
