I don't know how many forwards Basile plans on taking to the Copa America, but these are the six I would definitley take:
Hernan Crespo
Javier Saviola
Carlos Tevez
Diego Milito
Rodrigo Palacio
Mariano Pavone

That seems a good list. I wonder if Basile will take Aguero along for the experience or whether he will play in the World Youth Cup.
I think the squad will be a mixture of experienced players and youngsters, it would be nice to see someone like Garay get in the squad.

Aguero is a must go, sorry but Palacio still needs to prove to me that he is national team material, the fact that Aguero has some european experience and talent with both feet puts him over Palacio.

Crespo has to be a starter as our penalty area centerforward. And I'd put Tevez and Messi alongside him, as withdrawn forwards who can rotate and swich.
I want to see Messi and Tevez playing together. I think they are capable of great things. At the last WC, there were some combinations that were amazing, but unfortunately they didn't play together enough.
Milito can be an alternative for Crespo, and I'd like to see Saviola and Aguero as potential sparks off the bench, to cover for Messi and Tevez.

Huh? Just because Aguero has played in Europe automatically puts him above Palacio? Palacio has talent with both feet. Find some videos of his goals last year. He was scoring all types of goals with both feet attacking through both wings. What does Palacio need to prove?
12 goals and 7 assists in 19 games last Apertura.
5 goals in 7 games so far this Clausura.
14 goals in 22 international games for Boca.
Plus Aguero has already said he wants to go to the WYC. Even if he goes to the Copa America he probably won't play since he'll be behind Tevez, Saviola, Crespo, Milito... His best bet is if he's used as an attacking midfielder like he played sometimes at Independiente.
Palacio's albility to play on the wings makes him much more versatile than alot of the other forwards allowing for more varied formations.

First off as much as I like Aguero he hasn't exactly lit it up in Spain. I know he's young but how long has it been since he's scored?
Secondly how exactly does he deserve a spot over Palacio? In fact what has he done overall to deserve a spot on the NT over any of the other players mentioned in this thread?
Palacio plays on spurts? And you make it seem as if Palacio doesn't assist. He plays through the wings and he's a better crosser than any of the other forwards Argentina has. If you pair him up with a striker that's very good in the air he'll be putting up great passes and crosses at him all day. Why do you think Palermo keeps on scoring and scoring and has looked good in recent years. It's his pairing with Palacio. And Palermo doesn't even finish half the chances Palacio puts for him. If that were the case Palacio would be averaging as many assists as goals. He's an extremeley unselfish players that contributes to the game much more than scoring. Like Tevez.
Add to that the fact that Palacio has been scoring constantly for a while now. The only thing Aguero is better at than Palacio currently is finishing and maybe dribbling but not by much.
And don't give me the Europe bullcrap. Maxi Lopez plays in Europe .

i like palacio he makes palermo look good, however i think that we should take the passarella approach and have him cut his hair to be in the nt. also kun hasnt played in his natural position. but i think that it should be palacio and lavezzi that go, kun and zarate should go to wyc.

Agree. And I think Kun should be tried out in the attacking midfielder position like he played at Independiente.
Zarate is an excellent goalscorer but he's way too selfish. But he's young I'm sure he'll get over that.

Aguero has had a very good first season in Spain. I know he hasn't scored for a while but when you consider he is 18 and playing his first season in europe he has done well in a very inconsistent side. Definite future superstar. This Copa might just be too soon for him though given the numerous forwards Argentina have to pick from.

I completely agree. Regardless of what anyone says, politics will dictate many decisions regarding the team for this Copa America. Many would argue that Aguero might be the right choice for a striker position on the senior team in Venezuela this summer, but there are other factors to consider...
A) Pressure to include as many Argentinean based players for this tournament. Only the top European based players in their position will make the list, and there are many names ahead of Aguero at striker.
B) Hugo Tocalli's insistance on having all the eligible European based players made available to him for the U-20 WC in Canada (with the exception of Messi). I wouldn't be surprised to see Aguero and Higuain (if healthy) playing along side together in Canada this summer.
C) Experience. There are great expectations to win this year's CA. I am sure that Basile will pick players that have already proven themselves on the NT. While Aguero is hugely talented, he still needs to mature into the player that will lead Argentina in 2010.

Dude Villagra has been poop so far this year, I am not sure if he should even be in River's bench. Also I am not sure if Belluschi should be included, definetly not as a starter. Also, where's Masche? He has to be there. I like your list of goalies though and I also like to see Ledesma and Palleta there somewhere. Its good that you are going with young players but we would also need some leadership, I say include Veron, Ayala, Heinze, Burdisso and Zanetti, let the young guys earn some minutes here and there.

I would put Messi on the left Crespo in the middle and Tevez on the right and swap Crespo for Saviola mid second half
and take subs like Maxi Rod, D Milto and Agurro

guys the fact that Aguerro is 'only 18' doesn't mean anything.
Yes he may have more potential but we are talking about right now and so far Palacio is playing better. We're not talking about how good Aguerro might be when he is like 23 or 24

To be fair, I think give Aguero another year and he is going to be on fire. But I take your point, Aguero has got plenty of time to make his mark on Argentine football, right now there are plenty of others who are in front of him as far as being called up to the Copa squad is concerned.

I agree.
We must utilize the talent we have. We have so many good players, thats why we must play the one those are on form in every game. We must take a game at a time. Since we have so many talented players we must use the talent if we are to win something. Let's see if Messi is off form and there is other player who is on fire, then we must drop Messi for that form player, this is how i think we can benefit from the huge amount of talent on our disposal.

Im sorry , but I find a lot of contradictions in statements made in other threads from some regulars here. I hear from the same people that we must use the best talent we now have and then from these same people I hear things like , " Sorin is to old, or Zanetti , or Ayala, Veron has no future etc, etc, etc. Well wich one is it?? Either we look at the full spectrum of players we have, including 35+ players or we invest in the future, or is it a mix, ( wich is what I think is going to happen ). Problems I have is when a spot is taken , wether it be the Copa, qualifiers or other tourneys with young players that we pretty much know will not even be close to being on the 2010 team!! It is thus that I think Aguero takes an edge over Palacio, Veron thanks for the memories, Ayala sorry man but time to move over, Zanetti you are the best but we must give the kids time. Zabaletta, Lequi, Ferrari, Aguero, Messi, Insua, Gago, Higuain, Zarate, Carizzo, Ponzio, all these guys will be in their prime in 2010 and should be given tough vital experience as early as now!!

Holy shit. I didn't think I'd ever see the day where someone would want Villagra in the NT much less as a starter!!!!! Castroman needs to put down the pipe :D.
