While I agree that there will never be another Maradona, Pele, or Zico I do think that Cristiano could be on his way towards being in that category. He is only 21 and if he keeps this type of skill and dominance he could be the next superstar. He will play his next WC when he is 24. If he keeps shining with Man U and then lifts the tropy at 24 while being as dominant as he is today he will be the next classic superstar. BUT he must keep his focus and maintain his level. This is very hard to do, i mean, look at Ronaldinho. I think most people would agree that he seems to have lost his drive.

dont offend these players, why would C.Ronaldo wanna be a short, cocky , drug addicted rude socialist scum? (JOKE, DONT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY U SENSITIVE PEOPLE)
Anyway, i think it could be C.Ronaldo but who knows, maybe he will get badly injured. He has only been playing great this season, he needs to do it for 2-3 more years.

Thierry Henry? I'm sure he will go on to become the next Maradona after signing on for Barcelona at the age of 30.

I would say Cristiano Ronaldo. I really respect him as a player now, even though I don't support ManU or Portugal. He has really become a man.

He has played great for years but usually only in the latter half of seasons. This time he hit the ground running from day one and has maintained that form throughout the season. This poll is stupid though.

Haha! If you live out here where I'm at a lot of people would tell you Beckham but out here in Los Angeles it's the land of big hype! Here today, gone tomorrow ... Next! Haha! The game nowadays' has many great players' with loads of talent but for the most part they all look & play the same! Soccer is not a sport anymore it's just a huge corperate money making machine. Players' nowadays do not play for honor but more so play for money & fame. I'm not saying Maradona was some Angel as he became a by product of the state of the game he played in. He started to believe his own hype & became lost in the underside of drugs & the lot! Still when he was on, he was on & nobody could touch him when he was dialed in his game. It's hard to say who will step up to carry that flame. I just think the game has changed a great deal & it's very hard for a gifted player to really stand out in the long run. I could be wrong but then I could be right. Only time will tell. I just hope soccer is able to get past this garbage that Beckham is riding the crest of & remain the king of all sports!:D

Aside from the hand ball, what has Messi done that even warrants his being mentioned in the same breadth. Don't get me wrong, Messi is brutally talented but he hasn't shown me that much yet.

I believe he was also referring to the goal against Getafe.

Maradona was the almost undisputed world's best player in his prime. Look at the polls on this site on who is the best player in the world and you will see that we cannot even agree on that this year. There is no player today (though there certainly are great players) who is so much better than his peers as Maradona was at his best.

Being Barcelona's best player.

Also, it's great how in the poll, none of the options are midfielders. Like Maradona.

Being Barcelona's best player.
So thats all it takes these days to be considered the next Diego? If he was leading a smaller less star-studded team then maybe you'd have an argument but being on one of the best teams money can buy just doesn't merit being the next whomever. Besides, Aguero is the better player;)

Freddy Adu.
No scratch that. Roy Lassiter.
