Plenty of players are regularly mentioned in the same breath as Maradona...
..and my point is that no player should be named in the same breadth of Maradona, Pele, Beckenbaur, Cruyff.........none of these up and comers have shown enough to warrant that kind of hype. They may show glimpses and definitely potential but what if they end up being nothing more than solid contributors? Based on the hype some of these guys receive, they have no chance of meeting those expectations. Is that fair?

Messi is still a kid, but he's way beyond showing only glimpses and potential already. Many, many people, and even players and coaches already consider him the best player in the world in his still immature state. He has never been only a solid contributor since his first game. He's already a different case than all the other "next Maradonas." Aimar, Saviola, Tevez, none of them have Messi's popularity, or anything close. He's not a promise, it's only a question of how long he can keep it up, what he can achieve, and whether he can get even better. Argentina will be one of the favorites for the next one or two WCs, and if he can tear it up with those teams, then he might be mentioned with the greats. But really, the point is that he's been showing the talent of a young great for a while now.

I completely agree with your post. I'm not discrediting anything Messi has and is doing. He's won me over as I tend to look at starlets with a skeptics eye but I also want long term results before I put a players in the category of all-time greats.

I agree as well. I just tend to object when people rush to crown a new king. Messi is one of my favorite players to watch. But we should give it some time before we put him in the group of untouchables.

[quote=Moishe;13575496]Does he really play against better defenders? I'd like to see you back that assertion up. Here is some more food for thought; Messi is injury prone and plays at a time when attacking players are overly protected by the refs while Maradona played in a era which had no such luxury. Do you think Messi would physically hold up to the abuse attackers had to put up with in the not so distant past?
Yes I do because they wouldnt have been able to catch Messi. Just like modern players are left behind by messi now imagine players back then. They would have just seen messi number.

It's one of the better threads we've had and it goes a long way to debunking plenty of myths about the game. I guess it might be too much reading for you huh:rolleyes:

Dude, just for my curiousity, have you seen Maradona playing ? Not a bunch of youtube clips, but the real thing, full games of his with Argentina and at club level with Argentinos, Boca, Barcelona and Napoli ?
Second, don't overrate Messi, please. All he did until now was to display some great moments of skill, in his own domestic league, playing for one of the two traditional powerhouses.
No one should be compared with an all-time great because of some OCCASIONAL great performances at league level.
Messi did not have until now even one league campaign dominated by him. Let him take CL and the World Cup by storm and then we talk.
From what I see, the bar is lowered day by day. When Ronaldinho was compared with Maradona, at least he already was the catalyst of Barcelona's revival and had 2 great seasons when he dominated La Liga. Now, Messi does not have even that, but the bullshit is already starting.

If that is the case, how do you explain that so many defenders are capable to play until they are 35 and beyond ? The first thing which goes down with age is speed, yet the decline of speed which occurs with age does not stop players like Maldini, Thuram, Makelele etc to compete at the highest level.
