In terms of style, Maradona could be considered roughly a combination of Messi and Roman, but it's unlikely Messi will ever control a game the same way as Maradona, but they play different positions, and comparing influence on the game IMO may not always be the best way to compare the players due to their positional difference. Maradona, being a CAM, has to dominate games to be considered one of the greatest, whereas Messi needs to make 3-6 explosive bursts with the ball that result in a few goals, regularly in matches to be considered a great players. In the end, they can both emerge as matchwinners, but you cannot make a direct comparison on playing style.

Messi has a different set of qualities and if he exploits them to his full potential, it's certainly possible that he will surpass Maradona.

True they were not exacts at the same position but they both had/have a tendency to show up all over the pitch. In that respect you can directly compare them.

What are these qualities that Messi has that make you sure that if he exploits them to his full potential he'll surpass Diego? I'll give you that Messi probably has a better game with his right foot. Thing is Maradona with only his left was still that much more incredible than any other player in history with the possible exception of Pele.

I think Messi is a phenom and certainly one of the best players in the world right now. At this age for Messi, Maradona was already head and shoulders the better more influential player. It's almost insulting to compare Messi with El Diego (not including personal) the player. No offense to Lionel, but he's got millions of miles to go before he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath.

post 687. you quoted Quaresma's post about a spazzo and you agreed with the spazzo. Now let's get to the bottom of this Cesc crap. Good player but next Diego? Thats an insult to damn near any real fan of the game and definitely to a real Argentino.

I wonder what it is that makes people feel as if there just has to be a next "Diego" or "Pele" right now? The truth is there is not one playing today. Knowing sports there will be another player that great at some point. But I do not see one playing today.

I see a babies handful of players that encompass a trait here or there but not one single player in this current generation stands out as having that certain special something Diego had or for that matter Pele as well.

Ok fair enough, I misread the post - I meant he could start for A top 4 team in europe. And I still stand by it.

There's no reason why in time Cesc cannot be compared to Diego if Cesc goes on to have a similar career.

That's asking an awful lot of a young man whose at no point in his career shown a glimpse of what Diego had at the same age. It's comments like yours that place such unreal expectations that they could do nothing but fail. Let him work his magic and then we can talk if not, let him grow in the first Cesc not some god he'll never be.

Correct. Not much else needs to be said.

That's exactly what I said in my post .

Then when that happens make your claims. Not now when it's not even close. Hell by the time Maradona was Cesc's age he had already scored over 100 goals for his club.

Nope, you said "any top 4 team".

There's no reason why Landon Donovan cannot start for a top 4 team at his best.
