Gore Vidal?

Anybody a fan? I've only read (actually, "listened" on audiobook) one of his books, "The Golden Age," which didn't really overly impress me. Is he more interesting as an essayist?

I think I'll give "Myra Breckenridge" and "Burr" a try before totally writing off his novels.
