I love beer and have wanted to start a thread for a while to discuss and share insights on the lovely world of Brewania.
Would love to hear thoughts, I'm always on the lookout for new information.
What are some of your favorite beers?
Which direction do you go for a good cheap beer?
Do you do microbrews, and if so what are your favorite micro-brews?
Where are some great places to drink or buy beer or best selection?
Are there some good unique beers brewed regionally here in Texas you've had and would recommend?
What was the best beer you ever had?
Best pub or pub experience?
What was your first beer?
Ales/Pilsners/Belgian-Wheat/Dark...preferences?
Let's discuss.

One beer that I tried recently that have become fond of is a dark beer called Maredsous. It is so good. There is another chinese beer that I had at this sushi restaurant in downtown Dallas called Steel but I can't remember the name of the beer. It starts with an H though :o I usually just stick to bud light because it's cheap. But if i ever get to a place that has Maredsous or Fat Tire, I love those beers so I would pick those anyday over anything else. I think my very first beer was a Budweiser. Not very fond of it now. I guess that's my .o2.

I'm in college... so I drink what I can, when I can.
Keystone light wouldn't be on my favorites list, but it's most commonly what you'll find me drinking, and usually through a beer bong.
As far as cheap beers that actually taste decent... I'm a big fan of budweiser. I'm not really into beer w/ lots of hops, and the bud does me just fine.

I love beer too.
1. What are some of your favorite beers?
only counting "normal" beers, and not the more exotic ones, I have to go with Corona w/ a lime, for its nostalgaic value. Shinerbock and Guinness also rank highly among the classics.
2. Which direction do you go for a good cheap beer?
"The Champaign of Beers" is the best cheap brew you can buy.
3. Do you do microbrews, and if so what are your favorite micro-brews?
microbreweries are where it is at. I always try to sample as many as I can at every place I travel. some of the best I've had are "Holy Smoke" and "The End of the World" up in Ontario, the latter weighing in at something like 11% alcohol. but right here around Iwate Prefecture in Northern Japan we have the fantastic, Japan-Cup-gold-medal-winning Iwate Kura Beer.
4. Where are some great places to drink or buy beer or best selection?
I miss Cellarman's Pub in Sherman, the hangout for a lot of Austin College students. they had a good beer menu with a rotating selection, and most of the biggest names in microbrewing from around the country.
5. Are there some good unique beers brewed regionally here in Texas you've had and would recommend?
Rahr & Sons, near downtown Fort Worth. take the tour and have a glass poured by Fitz Rahr himself!
6. What was the best beer you ever had?
quite possibly Victory Golden Monkey, an award-winner of some kind that I had at Trinity Hall during the World Cup.
7. Best pub or pub experience?
Trinity Hall during the World Cup, hanging out with my friends and getting hammered. if only the US hadn't been getting hammered too.
8. What was your first beer?
I don't remember. but I imagine it was something standard and next-to-water like Bud or Coors.
9. Ales/Pilsners/Belgian-Wheat/Dark...preferences?
a smokey, dark, rich ale for me.

Where are some great places to drink or buy beer or best selection?
One of the best beer selections I've seen is at the Central Market - located in University Park in Dallas, located right off of 75 at Lovers Lane (my directions might be off since I'm not a native). But since I live far away from that place it is a definite stop at any trip taken to the Metroplex. Apart from being an awesome store, it has the most amazing beer selection I've seen. It has your typical imports - Guinness, Corona - but also a few awesome brands that are hard to find, like Carlsberg.

For my entire life I was always a lager type(bud/miller/coors) of beer drinker. The more they tasted like water, the better I liked them. I never liked the ales or any of the heavy lagers, as I found them to be too bitter for my taste.
Then last year I started to read a similar beer thread in the Revs forum, and thought to myself: with all these hundreds of ales and micro-brews out there, there's got to be at least 1 or 2 that can agree with my taste buds.
And so began my "Search For The Ideal Beer" campaign.
Every week I would buy 8-10 different beers(mostly ales, some local brews) and would try one per day, sometimes two. I kept a log of each beer's characteristics(color, smell, taste, texture, froth, etc... ), mostly for reference and to make sure I don't buy and re-test the same beer again.
Additionally, I immersed myself in cyber-space and garnered an abundance of knowledge about the subject.
So after about three months of this, and having tested over 80 different beers, I finally found what I was looking for. Some were awful, many were so-so, and a few I fell in love with.
Since then, I never went back to the bud/miller/coors types.
For me, the Belgian beers topped the list.
In order of preference:
* Chimay Premiere- (Belgian Trappist Ale, expensive, but worth every penny)
* Blue Moon- (unfiltered Belgian White, with a touch of orange)
* Hefeweizen- (unfiltered German, Sam Adams brand is best)
* Newcastle Brown Ale- (not bad at all)
* Sam Adams Black Lager

I do something similar. I try to buy new beers in bottle form and I keep each new cap and turn it into a refrigerator magnet. and I keep a spreadsheet of what beer the cap came from, where I got it, where the beer is from, and whatever additional comments I have about it.

I'll second the Central Market for beer selection part, but Carlsberg is shit.

What are some of your favorite beers?
I'm with Parrothead, nothing better than a corona with lime on a summer day. In a pub, I'll usually drink either Stella or Carling, kinda crappy but cheap. Bud Select is also a tailgating beer of choice.
Which direction do you go for a good cheap beer?
Turn 21 on June 27th, right after I get home but I gotta say Mr. G's at Plano Pkwy and Coit(I think)
Do you do microbrews, and if so what are your favorite micro-brews?
Tried a microbrew in SLC called Polygamy Porter.....let's just say I don't do microbrews
Where are some great places to drink or buy beer or best selection?
In London: Jolly Anglers, Weatherspoons(If you want cheap), Lord Nelson
In Dallas: Dr. Pepper Pavillion at Pizza Hut Park sponsored by the Cheap Brew Crew and Budweiser Select.
Are there some good unique beers brewed regionally here in Texas you've had and would recommend?
Lone Star
What was the best beer you ever had?
How can you name just one?
Best pub or pub experience?
In Dublin singing along with the locals to songs I knew maybe 3 words to, except Dirty Old Town....you pick that one up pretty quick.
What was your first beer?
Heineken.....freakin hated it the first time.

Let me also give an honorable mention to Bavaria. It's usually cheap and very underrated.

Mr G's is at Coit and 15th Street. Goody Goody in the Colony (and soon to open at 423 and Eldorado) is better, though.
I'm with whomever said they liked the Belgian beers. Blue Moon is a great one, but a tad too much citrus for me. I like Shiner Heff better.
Cheap beer......Champagne of Beers is pretty damn good.
Microbrews....most of them suck and try to be too damn fancy. Don't stick no citrus in my beer. Fruit is for salads, not beer.
I'll second the recommendation for Fahr & Sons.

cheap beer: No preferance, it all tastes the same after a while but I lean more towards Coors Light.
Favorite beer: Newcastle! Thanks to Jason (Zen) for introducing me to that one.
Bud select SUCKS
I use to love High Life and Blue Moon but both have fallen by the wayside lately for me.
Drank Keystone in my early College years (yes I'm still in it) but can't imagine drinking that watered down piss now.
Corona and Shiner Bock are good on certain occations.
But Newcastle is what you'll usually see me drinking.

I always drank Coors light in high school, I had so much to learn.
My favorite beer changes about every month, but right now it is probably Amber Boch or Shiner Boch
Worst beer: Guinness
I have a lot of good bar experiences but don't remember the best of them. Maybe whipping some a$$ at shuffleboard and watching FCD beat the cRapids last sunday with a Red Stripe in hand. Good times, good times.

Smithwicks
Guiness
Pacifico
The Londoner, Meridian Room, or the Double Wide
Some of the St. Arnold's brews aren't too bad... and there a Texas micro. Micros just tend to have that "microbrew funk" aftertaste. Bad, and not in a Funkadelic kind way.
