Today a footballing legend has passed away. World Cup winner Alan Ball died at the age of 61. He was a great player and also one of, if not the first pro to wear white boots.

I am sure there would have been someone else to wear them if he didn't but he was the first to step in to the boots, so when you lace up you white, red, orange, or whatever color other than black boots today, remember Alan Ball.

I heard about this this morning as well. Apparently he had a heart attack while trying to put out a bonfire. Tragic loss of life, 61 is too young to die.

My thoughts are with his family. :(

It's a shame so many outstanding former professional athletes die from heart attacks. Even if you are completely burnt out and don't feel like playing your sport any more (even for fun), at least you could go for a nice 30-40min run every day. That will keep you fit for life. Pretty sad, anyway.

By the way, are those Hummels?

Yup.

All the league will be wearing black armbands out of respect this weekend.

yep. him and jimmy johnstone for a little bit were the only 2 players in that era wearing white shoes. not only that, they both wore hummels.

They actually brought his white Hummel boots onto the field before the Everton - Man Utd game.

I do believe Charlie George wore red or sometime white Hummels, but only a few years later.

He got a fantastic standing ovation at all of the games yesterday. Its actually really nice to see everyone clapping and chanting 'there's only one alan ball. One alan baaaaaaall' because if you have a minutes silence you can be sure one idiot will spoil it by yelling something out!

I don't want to go and ruin the whole idea of the tribute thread, but I've got to add to this.

In South Africa it seems like a minute's silence is a farce - most of the people just continue to blow their vuvuzelas. It actually makes me want to beat them repeatedly and bang their idiot heads together.

You really need a crowd where the people would be too scared of the consequences of shouting, but then again you would hope that people have eniugh brains and respect to shut the hell up!
