ok, i thought that there was already a thread on this guy. so i went into the Boca forum and find that there is a claim that lavolpe is a complete idiot.
now myself as well as many other Argentine is an idol for doing what he did to Boca. but i have always disliked him for being so stubborn on many things, like making the keeper play the ball to defenders, and also the fact that he should have punished sessa.
however after the press conference he did i realized that this man is very knowledgeable in the sport.
1. he has the balls to say out loud that players today don't stay longer to practice and that they don't care as much, they rather play playstation.
2. he said kids win games, but man win championships. and this is an excellent statement look at all the teams that play with kids, yeah they are fun to watch but they don't have the stuff that the older players bring, player like veron, calderon, palermo, c. ledesma, piojo lopez.
look at lanus they win games but they wont win championships.
so i think that this guy is definetly one of the people that we can learn of. el bigoton definetly has many positive sides.

I always like Lavolpe since he came up from Banfield and was in the Seleccion, I respect his knowledge but I don't like the way his teams play, however, he's tainted in my eyes since he coached Mexico, becoming quite the Mexican and going against the Seleccion.

well i never cared about him or his teams i just think that he is a pretty intelegent coach, he explained well why he went with the 3-4-3, and plays offensive football. he has his drawbacks but he is very knoledgable. he turned me who hated the 3-5-2 after the boca beating into a person who understands why you defend with four. he has bad luck that jis forwards are missing in action.

ciclon ... I have some free time now, so will go ahead and play some devil's advocate regarding this clown.
There is a BIG diffenence between playing with 3 in the back ... and with 5. That is what La Volpe does. He uses a left back and a right back and pushes them forward, lines 3 central defenders and adds 1 or 2 defensive midfielders.
This is not offensive football! This is defensive football. You can never compare the ability of a right/left midfielder (for example Sosa or Neri Cardozo) with the ability of a right back like the Mexie Mendes he brought to Velez.
If you pretend to push forward with "carrileros" that have no real skill to do so, you will end up just bouncing against the opponents defense.
Lets say he uses only 1 defensive midfielder. He is technically playing:
CD - CD - CD
RB - DM - LB
That is 6 defensively oriented players and only 4 to do something forward.
Many coaches are criticized when playing a 4-4-2 that uses 2 defensive midfielders. Ramon uses it in this San lorenzo ... Bianchi used it when Riquelme was sold. In this case, the 2 outer mids are also meant to push forward ... adding 4 to attack.
But La Volpe will many times use a 3-4-3 ... in which the 4 in the middle are: a right back, a left back, and 2 defensive midfielders. Yes, he asks them to push forward. But they don't have the natural ability to do so ... they are destructive not constructive.
In summary ... his tactical schemes are the typical of a small team that closes you up in every inch of the field and then tries to find a goal somehow. This is the rule of the Mexican league.
He slashes 4-3-1-2 and even 4-4-2 formations as antique. He indeed is a Van Gaalist, the difference with Van Gaal is that he would use 3 in the back and not use carrileros but offensive mids.
How antique are teams like: Chelsea, Milan, Inter, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Porto or Lyon? They all use 4 defenders. Most use 4 mids ... some like Barza uses 3 and 3 forwards. But none of them use 5 defenders. Leave that for Levante, Nastic or Reggina.
Will continue.

well the thing that i think he does is that he says why he defends with three and that is that apart from boca and arsenal very few teams attack with their wingbacks, so he defends with three. fact of matter is that everyone talks about how offensive cholo is but lets not forget that he took out cassiera and put in pablo alvarez so that he can defend with three and have only mambru join the attack. i remeber you guys saying once how lavolpe put four forwards at once against arsenal and reportesrs and here everyone was like oh he uses four attackers its not a strategy, cholo does it and he is a god. sometimes personalities have to come to play. also velez lost some jewels. and really doesnt have that strong of a midfield as it used to have, lets remember that against danubio mendez played a defensive role, today he has a much more active offensive role.
also the thing about ramon tactics when he use 4 in the middle is having lavezzi come back to contribute to the attack but you have a very defensive center and the attack really depended on rivero and lavezzi, or gata in that case.
then again chealsea and barcelona they really only use one striker they play a
4-2-3-1, its offensive but you have quality players to do so. who do you want to do that in velez bustos, fabianesi, or papa who was used defensively alot in rosario. maybe balvorin can be the eto'o and castroman the ronaldinho.

LaVolpe coaches like how I would expect people of my generation (im almost 20) to coach.
Playstation style.
He has no basis behind his tactics.Just like people who play PS who just put a bunch of the 'best' players on the field at once.
All out of position with no clue of what they are doing.
Ibarra playing mid, Morel CM (which luckily managed ok), everyone packed into the middle, we looked like chickens running with their heads cut off. The midfield was a mess with so many players not knowing what to do jsut because he wanted to ge the 'best' players out there thinking that a great defender would make a better midfielder than a good midfielder would
just like a kid who plays Playstation who plays the 78 and 79 rated attackers and thus decides to put the 74 rated attacker in defense since he is rated higher than the 71 rated CB or something like that (hope you get what i mean :-p )
