I was curious if anyone had any insight on the roster for the upcoming Copa America??

I know el Coco announced the team w/ local players but i hope we'd be taking Messi and hopefully Tevez among others to Copa America?

Hopefully someone can clue me in THANKS!

many said they wanted to play and players like Pato, Ayala and Crespo will probably be there as it could be their last tourney with Argentina.

Messi, Aguerro and Tevez (from what I've heard) really want to play.

I think the Copa squad is going to be a mixture of experienced players (Veron/Zanetti/Crespo) and the very young players (Ustari/Messi/Aguero/Gago), so it should be a good mix. I just want to see Argentina win something, it's long overdue, I still have nightmares over the last Copa final.

Aguero said he wants to play in the U-20 World Cup. I doubt he'll go to Copa America.

There is only one place you need to go to get up-to-date info on Argentinian soccer: www.ole.clarin.com

To answer your question: 31 of the 44 players on the preliminary squad will be from the local league...which leaves room for 13 european players. I couldnt find the exact article, but I am pretty sure those were the numbers. In that same article they said that of the final 22, 7 or 8 would be local...but that cant be right cuz then the math doesnt work.

Here is more info:

http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2007/05/08/um/01414929.html

Three of the final 22 will be keepers...Ustari, Pato, Carrizo.

http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2007/05/09/01415111.html

Keep checking the site...there is usually news on the Seleccion every other day, if not daily.

I think the Brasil squad will be good during the Copa America.. Naldo & Alex are strong physical players and Juan is an experienced player.. the midfield is exciting to watch because of Diego Anderson & Robinho.. Vagner Love will need to step it up if Brasil have a chance

according to basile these 9 players are already on the list,Zanetti, Burdisso, Cambiasso, Crespo, Lucho González, Tevez, Mascherano, Heinze y Pinola

now u have to account for the other players in spain and the 6-7 players in the local league...if i wanted to fill in the blanks i would put this team

GK-carizzo,ustari

Df-zanetti,burdisso,heinze,pinola,ibarra,ayala, G.milito

MF-cambiasso,lucho gonzalez,mascherano,gago,aimar,veron

I think if Lucho steps up and plays well he can be a great secondary playmaker to help Messi in midfield :/

I still think this whole Enganche thing is something that we are grasping at straws at. With the lack of really strong wing players why the need to pull them into central areas?????? I want Messi on the right and Lucho on the left, Mascherano and Cambiasso in the defensive mid and perhaps Aimar as the central free role in the mid or D'Allesandro . I still believe in the 3-2-2-1-2 formation!! If we insist on bringing some vets along have Ayala as the cb stopper, Gonzalo Rodriguez on the right and Heinze on the left. Zanetti can play in the mid on the right or at the rb position of the bench!! We still have Maxi too who is very versatile and Collocini too!!:) There is only a lack of finding a system, sticking to it, and then as mentioned before finding a real leader with fire in the belly. As of what I have seen lately and what I would like to see , here is my current line-up idea,

carrizo

Gonzalo Rodriguez---------Ayala------------------Heinze---------

----------Mascherano----------------Cambiasso--------------------

---Messi--------------------------------------------------Lucho---------

----------------------------Aimar----------------------------------------

-------------------Crespo---------------------Tevez--------------------

had lucho ever played LM?
3 defenders with heinze will give people heart attacks.

I think you are much to hard on Heinze, fact is with Mascherano and Cambiasso as defensive mids and Messi and Lucho who can play both a more free role there should be a lot of control in the midfeild;) . fact is when Argentina are caught it is either on set plays, balls over the top, or when possesion is lost and the defense is pulled up. I fail to see how having 4 or 3 defenders would curb this niggling problem we have had for at least 3 years. At the very least control could be established with mascherano playing a deep DM just in front of Ayala and Cambiasso the link for either the wing players or feeding Aimar!!

Heinze used to be solid. I'm just saying he's not at that form right now and, in comparison, couple other players might be genuine competitions for the left back position.

If we play 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-3 I'd rather see both gago and mascherano on the field though. Pekerman's WC formation was basically a 3-4-1-2 and I liked it besides the fact he didn't have Zanetti. so for this copa, an attacking formation I'd love to see would be something like:

----------------Carrizo/Ustari-----------------

----Zenetti-------Ayala-------Milito/Heinze----

------------Gago-----------Mascherano-------

-Messi-------------Aimar-----------Cambiasso-

--------Crespo------------------Tevez--------

They did alot of left-right swaps in the last 2 friendlies like the brazilian and portuguese. the lineup above would allow all the attacking players to do that since they are all used to playing both sides. I like lucho but he doesn't seem to like relocating to the left, so perhaps he's not as suited as cambiasso to that role.

but personally, I'd rather see a wing back running up instead of a holding mid like cambiasso. Basically someone that doesn't go as high up and back tracks more. I've noticed some people here don't like Sorin, but had to say, he would of fitted in perfectly here.

sorry to tell you this but gonzalo is out for a while, and knowing coco that vendido will use a 4-3-1-2. and use gago. i dont understand how people can support this piece of shit of a coach.

The reality is, it's extremely unlikely that Basile will risk his job with a 3-4-1-2, but he's willing to play zenetti the right wing back, so best I could hope for would be:

---------------------Carrizo/Pato---------------------

Zenetti--------Ayala----Milito----Bottinelli/Heinze/Pinola

-------------Gago------------Mascherano-------------

-------------------------Aimar------------------------

-----------Messi--------------------------------------

--------------------Crespo-----------Tevez-----------
