Lyon est officiellement champion de France pour la sixième saison consécutive. La victoire de Rennes contre Toulouse (3-2) fait que l'OL ne peut plus être rejoint en tête de la Ligue 1, même s'il perdait ses six derniers matches. Avec 70 points, Lyon ne peut plus être rejoint par Toulouse, qui peut cumuler 67 points maximum, ni Lens, vainqueur du Mans (2-0), qui plafonnera à 68 points en cas de parcours parfait. Six titres de champion de France, c'est un fait historique unique en France et dans les grands championnats européens (Italie, Espagne, Angleterre, Allemagne). Lyon, par ailleurs, bat le record de précocité du Championnat de France en étant sacré à cinq journées de la fin.

It is true, we are spoiled.

But I think some of the disappoint is valid. It's troubling to think that Lyon has maxed out its potential and reached its limits.

Ligue 1: Houllier demande des "garanties" pour rester à Lyon
L'entraîneur de Lyon Gérard Houllier a réclamé samedi sur RTL des "garanties" à son président Jean-Michel Aulas pour rester à son poste la saison prochaine, après l'obtention du sixième titre de champion de l'OL, affirmant "se poser des questions" en raison du "bombardement médiatique" qu'il subit, selon lui.

"Il y a eu tellement de choses écrites et dites, encore cette semaine, que je me pose beaucoup de questions, pas sur mon avenir, parce que je sais ce que je vais faire. Mais il y a un certain nombre de garanties que j'aimerai avoir et que je n'ai pas actuellement", a affirmé le technicien lyonnais, arrivé à Lyon en 2005.

"Un jour, c'est avec mon staff, le lendemain, c'est avec certains joueurs, qui d'ailleurs viennent me prévenir et me rassurer (...), un autre jour, c'est avec des dirigeants. Je ne comprends pas parce que je fais mon travail du mieux possible. C'est une saison plus difficile parce qu'elle ne correspond pas à toutes nos aspirations mais on ne peut pas dire que ce soit une mauvaise saison", a-t-il ajouté.

"En deux ans, il y a eu 76 journées de Championnat, puisqu'on sera encore premiers lors des six dernières journées, et le club aura été premier 70 fois. C'est pas trop mal quand même. Mais si cela ne satisfait pas, je peux le comprendre, a encore ironisé Gérard Houllier. Si on n'est pas content, j'irai ailleurs."

"Avec le président (Jean-Michel Aulas) je m'entends très bien, a-t-il expliqué. C'est un très bon président. Peut-être pas trop reconnu parce qu'il dérange et provoque. Pour un entraîneur, c'est un super président parce qu'il vous soutient. Mais c'est normal que j'ai un doute en raison du bombardement médiatique qu'il y a à mon égard."

Jean-Michel Aulas a expliqué, de son côté, sur Canal +, que des discussions seraient engagées "dès la semaine prochaine" avec Gérard Houllier sur "une organisation plus pointue et plus performante".

"Gérard est indispensable aujourd'hui à l'Olympique lyonnais. Quand vous êtes dans un club avec un budget entre 180 et 200 millions d'euros et que vous êtes l'entraîneur d'un groupe avec 20 internationaux, c'est déjà une garantie", a précisé M. Aulas.

I think the fans have a right to be disappointed from the lack of CL success, but certainly should never ever boo. I could semi-understand if they booed during the Roma match, but not during an L1 match where the league has been wrapped up since November.

they'll never make it 7, even if they bring a whole bunch of real stars, the team spirit seems to have been lost, and I think, more than the Roma loss, it's the Milan loss of last season that hurt them the most. Without European glory, the players will never be satisfied, and winning against Troyes or Nice or Sedan and even against Paris and Marseilles bores them.
The fans are expecting Lyon to be on top of Europe, and that's why they're booing. They're picky, but that's to remind the players what they're expected to do, crush everybody in France and go to the top of European glory

But if Aulas does keep his promise, I think Lyon will finally reach the semifinals at least once before Juninho leaves.

If he does not, Lyon will slip and lose their title. And not because the rest of France caught up with them, that's not true, no team is even close, but Lyon has been letting themselves go this season, and they're bringing themselves down to our own level of mediocrity.

Still, Bravo to all, especially those who've been there for all 6 titles, Coupet, Juninho, Govou... and Cacapa, I think?

Nonetheless the club has brought them yet another title and they should be grateful about that.

I'm sure they felt grateful in December, which is when Lyon basically won the title. But the gratitude wears off, and it's easier to forget a success that's been pretty much guaranteed for months when you see your team play close to relegation style for the second half of the season.
