The ‘big five’ European leagues generated 54% of the total £7.8 billion European football market. These are the top tier leagues in England (£1.3 billion), Italy (£0.9 billion), Germany (£0.8 billion), Spain (£0.7 billion) and France (£0.5 billion)

English clubs are the most profitable in Europe, followed by Germany. For 2004/05, a record 14 clubs reported pre-tax profits
Revenue generated by The Championship clubs of £306m reaffirms it as Europe’s sixth biggest league, after the ‘big five’, and an impressive £134m ahead of the next biggest second tier league in Europe (Italian Serie B)

THE STANDING as of 2006: (based on the above info)

1. EPL (average $130 mil per team)*
2. Series A (average $90 mil per team)
3. Bundesliga (average $89 mil per team)
4. La Liga (average $70 mil per team)
5. Ligue 1 (average $50 mil per team)
6. Mexican Football League ??????
OR
6. Championship (average $25.5 mil per team)

Series B: (average $15.6 mil per team)

*EPL will increase to $160 mil per team starting in 2007/2008 due to the new TV deal.

-----Championship generate more revenue than top division from Netherland, Scotland, Portugal and Russia (Europe's other top leagues). I'm guessing that the 6th league belong to Mexico with around $25-30 mil a year. The payroll for Chivas and Club America is around $20 mil a year, which mean their revenue is around $40 mil a year. However, we know for sure that The Championship is the 6th best in Europe. Worldwide? Maybe not.

----In term of revenue, EPL is #3 in the world behind NFL and MLB and slightly ahead of NBA according to wikipedia. NHL is #4.

The Championship is 6th because it has 24 teams.
The 18 Eredivisie teams in the Netherlands have an average revenue of €19,1 million or $25,9 million.

the remarkable thing about the championship though is that it has a small tv deal, and obviously, no champions league money.

The bulk of that money is just from tickets at high prices, a healthy average of nigh on 18,000 and 23 home games.

I am surprised with Bundesliga over La Liga. I thought that La Liga generated a large income from the Latin America and now Asia while Bundesliga is a "domestic"-based market.

Actually, I do not trust deloitte or any accounting firm. They can move numbers around and creat what they want you to see.:)

Yeah, I've seen those stats before. It's amazing how fast the EPL has climbed since the 90s. They have a good business model to be emulated by others.

Serie A, however, have only themselves to blame to losing their top spot. For all the revenue that Serie A generates, very little of it comes from stadium revenues...especially compared to the EPL. If they had the guts to make some serious investments in stadiums and security the way the English did, Serie A's revenues would climb rapidly due to enhanced game day revenues.

Maybe when more and more people stay home in Italy to watch the games on TV and serie A slips to #3 or #4, then they'll react. but it'll be too late.

The J. Leagues clubs had average operating incomes of 2.956 billion yen (a 7.3% increase from the previous year) in J1 and 1.07 billion yen (a 9.4% increase) in J2 in the 2004 financial year. Eight J1 clubs recorded turnovers of over 3 billion yen this time, suggesting the growing emergence of a group of big clubs, but no major change was observed in J2.

J-1 revenue calculation:

2.956 billion yen in 2004, 7% growth rate = 3.4 billion yen in 2006.

3.4 billion yen / 120 yen/$ = $28.33 million

J-2:

1.07 billion yen (9% increase) = 1.27 billion yen = $10.6 mil
