Both had their great moments and its tough to say whos better.
Qualifiers: all i have to do is remember when Etcheverry scored against Brasil giving them their first ever loss. (thats when I became hooked to soccer and Bolivia). Also there was another qualifier against Colombia in 98.. where the game was in Bolivia and the El Diablo had a free kick. The fans where chanting "Diablo" "DIablo" and then he takes the freek kick and scoressssss. The whole crowed went nuts.
Copa America: "Platini'S" goal from 35 out against Mexico in 97
World Cup: Etcheverry getting kicked out....... Sanchez scoring the only goal for Bolivia against Spain.
Club teams: Etcheverry for Colo Colo was the man..... He is an Icon for Dc UNited. Sanchez played well in Benfica, he had a bigger impact when he was in Boavista and won a title with them. Sanchez went on to coach the team for a season.
They are pretty equal to me.

OK well if you go by how their career went it could be either way, but Platini has the edge for being the leader of Boavista when they were in their prime, giving them one of their first, or first time ever at teh Champions league, back in 2000 i beleive around there. So he has etch beat there.
Now Etcheverry, in potential has got platini in the pocket. He was a superstar with Albacete, but due to some bad press and not being able to handle the pressure(depression) took some time off from playing with albacete. When he came back different coach, different plans so he goes back to SA. Colo colo scoops him up, he has one of his best season ever, Shows alot potential. Then has a untimely injury which cost him his chance to play for Real madrid. Why is this? Because his ex albacete coach at the time was the DT of real madrid and wanted him, and at that time he was out for a estimated year and some change. So he never went to Real.
By potential etch' has the edge over platini, but still both were my hero's growing up due to the holding midfielder and flashy style of play. We're not gonna be a bolivian like the either of them for a while...

Those were the days....

Yes very tough call to make. It's true that Etcheverry had more potential and was very exciting to watch. His legendary goal against Chile was incredible. After his nightmare injury in Colo-Colo I never thought he was quite the same player so it's a testament to his ability that he was so dominant in MLS back when they had some big name midfielders. However, he was not a very stable person. People in the know tell me that he had some troubles with drugs and partying in his early days and that was why he didn't make it in Spain. But in the end he got out of that. One wonders what could have been if he had been able to keep his career in Europe and matured emotionally a little earlier.
Sanchez along with Peņa is the epitome of the mature, professional player at the peek of his powers. I have a feeling that we don't truly appreciate him enough since he played most of his games in Portugal. He was good enough that some big shot dirigente expressed that he would have liked him to be in the Portuguese national team. On the other hand, he didn't make it in Benfica but for a few years during Sanchez's tenure in Boavista they were as good or better than Benfica.
So who was better? I think Sanchez had the better career but Etcheverry could certainly have been the better player. However, it was good to have two such complimentary players in the Sele.

I agree, etcheverry could have still been playing right now but due to his fitness which came from him drinking alot, in this area he got fat. He like much of us bolivians is good with the bottle of you know what i mean.

DIABLO:
Champions with BOLIVAR, COLO COLO, BARCELONA, DC UNITED, and INTER AMERICAN CUP
PLATINI:
Champions with only 2 teams.
Well,Platini had a harder landscape, though it's not easy to carry a team to a championship regardless of the league. Diablo did it multiple times in different continents.
Platini made the best of his potential. Diablo didn't maximize on his stock very well.
Both were great in different avenues. I'm just happy we had players like Chocolatin, Baldivieso, Melgar, Platini, and Diablo at one point on the same field.

I don't know what you mean. I've known Marco personally for the last ten years. I've gone out with him and his family. He's a great dad and husband. He didn't drink to excess anytime I've been around him. I think as he got older his metabolism slowed and he had some weight issues but never alcohol issues.

I dunno i dont know him personally, thats what i was told from his ex' tahuichi coach, who at the time was my coach who also was living with etch's bro jonny. I would always ask him about marco, and he'd tell me stuff about him and how he was doing. But i think he told me about his drinking or watever so i could chill out at the time LOL, who knows. But that was about the time marco was dropping off. I also heard how he was crazy back in the day with bolivar(not from profe. but from bolivians in general) cause of his hard partying same goes with experimenting with coccaine in spain and partying all day long when with albacete. Also my ex boss got etch's autograph onetime at some bar during the season around that time. LOL Who knows maybe its just me thinking about bolivians and their hard partying ways. Hell im gonna be 40 still getting hammered after work with my buddies.
Also its no lie, alcohol and a partying life style cut players careers short. For instance look at ronaldo or adriano, two great players but in some dangerous times due to gaining weight and over excessive partying.
And on the contrary, Goanfranco Zola. He was admired by his ex coach at chelsea forget his name, but in a article i read he stated how zola was a very desciplined man who never drank a drop of alcohol and worried alot about taking good care of his body like a well oiled machine. Thats why he was able to play pro for so long, late 30s maybe early 40s. Hell i think hes still playing in the serie B!!!
Again, im not trying to hate on marco, as hes my idol. If it wasnt for him i probably would have never loved this sport. Shit i'd probably be playing basketball or something and sucking at it lol.

This is a boatload of shit. Marco didn't do anything wrong and certainly did not deserve a red. I was sitting 75 feet from where him and Matteus went down. Marco stood up and kicked the ground even making grass fly. The ref who was thirty yards DOWNFIELD saw it and thought Marco kicked Matteus. Marco was a good 5 feet behind Matteus. When the ref brought out the red, 10,000 Bolivians went nuts. We were screaming bloody murder.
And for your info, a portugese tv station backed up this story three days later. And that ref never worked another WC game.

He shaped up a lot after, I think, going to Colombia. Hung out with some born-again players there. His, time in Spain, though, was ruined because of the aforementioned problems. I was wondering if he might have had a European career otherwise.

His career in spain got messed up because he was young, and couldnt handle it.
He stated in a article i read a little while back that he got all depressed after faking a foul which caused him to win it for albacete with a PK, and caused the press to hound him for cheating. Got all down and messed up in the head, then took a break for a bit to get his head in a good place as reccomended by the shirnks, came back and didnt have a spot on the team anymore as the DT that brought him to albacete went to Real Madrid and the new coach didnt want him anymore.
Thats what happens when your early 21s and cant handle the pressure.

Good memories of seeing him in Colo Colo... at the time he was without a doubt one of the greatest players in America and the signing made lots of noise. The injuries were very unfortunate.
Two great players... I'd give the edge to el Diablo but Platini was awesome too.

I was at that game also, maybe not as close as Chico but my first reaction was WTF. That ref had no business pulling a card, let a lone a red. Diablo's rep got tarnished for all the wrong reasons. It is sad that he had all the potential but something kept him from getting there, whether it was depression or injuries, he could've been great. Sanchez does have a different air around him. He did a lot in Portugal, but i'm not sure if he did have all the possibilities Marco had. That part i dont know for sure which makes it hard to decide.
Potential vs Reality
Marco had all teh potential (not to say he didnt acomplish anything but i'm sure it could've been a lot more than what materialized) and the Reality is that Sanchez did accomplish something with the biggest clubs in Portugal.

Okay check this out, i read this thread i thought that chismosos were the ones giving marco such a bad rep. on saturday i went to the cancha to see a game of the bolivian league. the score was tied and then all of the sudden i saw marco walk with his body/buddy guard towards the field you could see him comming from the parking lot people would stop him take pictures or whatever. So he played maybe 20 mins he scored two goals and made the difference. However he didn't do much playing the two goals were free kicks one was awsome from a little past half field and other one was from the pk spot. So he did make the difference. After the game he shaked a couple of hands and left. That night I went to a club in dc i dunno the name i usually don't go i like to party at the house or whatever. Anyways I went because of everyone else. So fast forward i am in the line to get in the club and there he is again marco with a nice sute and tie at the "vip" section with his bodyguard and couple of promoters. The promoters wanted everyone to see marco going in the club. So I got some drinks started dancing with some girls talking with the boys. And there is marco again in the "vip" tables drinking and partying with his buddy/bodyguard and now he has an entourage. three beutiful girls nice =).... next thing i see is him leaving with the girls and his buddy/bodyguard?????? wonder where they went. However my point is that somone early in the thread stated that marco was married or something i know he defenitly didn't seem married that night. And I am not spreading someone elses rummers. I SAW IT WITH MY OWN EYES. just an update, he is what 35-37 i know he is no spring chicken but man all that talent it just angers me a little to see it to waste in front of my eyes.
