We were discussing this in the "Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait" thread!

Reuters Soccer Blog (http://blogs.reuters.com/2007/04/14/enzo-following-in-fathers-footsteps/):

Enzo Zidane, named after his father’s idol, the graceful Uruguayan international Enzo Francescoli (http://www.argentinesoccer.com/crenzoen.html), is 12 years old and has started his footballing career on the right foot.

http://www.blazinnet.com/images/zidanejr.jpg

Young Enzo won his first trophy for one of Real Madrid’s youth teams last weekend when they beat arch-rivals Barcelona to win the Mediterranean International Cup in the Catalan coastal resort of Palamos.

Match reports (http://www.as.com/articulo/futbol/MIC/alevin/Enzo/Zidane/tumbo/Barca/final/dasftb/20070409dasdaiftb_30/Tes/) said that Enzo, who plays in the same position as his dad, even dared to showcase one of his father’s trademark pirouettes as he slipped past an opponent in midfield.

“My father gave me a couple of tips on how to do the ‘ruleta’,” Zidane junior told Marca. “The rest is down to me.”

Whether he can go on and enjoy anything like the success of his father is quite another matter, of course. Few footballing sons have managed to live up to expectations and emulate or even better the achievements of famous fathers. Which ones have managed it, or even come close?

He is the Captain of his team and he is already whopping Barcelona's ass.

So, is this En-Zou?

I saw a clip a while back of this kid kicking around with his dad and you can tell he was pretty talented. Let's hope Zizou never decides to leave Madrid!

Zidane has it pretty good in Madrid. Calderon even offered him a job as Coach for the Junior teams but Zidane said he wanted to enjoy his retirement first but was intereested in the job so i think he will be staying.

I think Zidane needs to take care of some issues before he takes up a coaching career, at any level.

If he is modest and humble as his father was he will become a very good player.

Best of luck to him.

Zidane has anger management issues on the pitch, he needs to make sure this doesn't carry over into his coaching, specially if he's coaching kids.

I know the incident in the World Cup final wasn't a one time thing, but I would hardly say that Zidane had anger management issues on the pitch...

I know the incident in the World Cup final wasn't a one time thing, but I would hardly say that Zidane had anger management issues on the pitch...

Off the top of my head, he has been awarded multi-game suspensions in 2 WCs (for obvious reasons the suspension in 2006 was meaningless, but he still got it) and one CL, all three for VERY dirty incidents. I find it very hard to find any top-level player with such a history.

That aside, when Zidane fouled, he fouled hard, sometimes with clear malicious intent. I understand that he was fouled more and harder than anyone else in the pitch, but if you can't deal with that without kicking back you do have anger management issues.

I remember an article in El Pais that said that Zidane himself admitted that his upbringing in tough immigrant neighbourhoods (watch your own back, make people respect you, do unto others as they do unto you, that kind of thing) had influenced his pro career. His occasional episodes of violence were not him losing his head, as most people think, but rather him watching out for himself first without thinking of the consequences for his team.

I don't want to start a debate here, Zidane is a classy man and a legendary player (my favourite of anyone I have watched play extensively). But precisely because he is all of the above he needs to revisit why he did some of the things he did, because it is not in his nature to do them. I suspect that this is precisely what he is doing before deciding whether to coach kids (or adults). I mean, coaching a kid's team is not a huge commitment, he can easily enjoy retirement and coach a handful of hours a week.

Talanted lad, lets hope he can continue to develop.

Just as a side issue...I know they are only young kids and to see kids upset is never nice but there is something very satisfying about seeing a Barca player lying on the pitch crying. :D

I know, I know...I'm a very bad person. :o

The kid's mum is French but born of Spanish immigrants so if she kept her Spanish citizenship Zidane's kid may be elligible too.

Why on Earth would he do that when he's already playing in the best youth system in the World? ;)
