"Terms were not disclosed, but Schelotto was not signed under Major League Soccer's new designated-player rule. It is believed his compensation package will be worth about $1 million per year, but his base salary will be far less."

how is that?? MLS player salary structure must have a lot of loopholes... if this is the case, no need for galaxy to acquire another DP for landon primadona next year

They have a lot of allocation money so they can use that to sign him rather than the DP spot.

Because the Crew had a ton of cap space and unused allocation $$$ the club could tap into. In fact, the Crew appear to have so much cap space, that's it's possible they could cash in their DP slot and have that $400K (max) still squeeze in under the cap.

Exactly. They're doing the same thing the Gals used for Landon previously and Chivas did for their Mexicans. Guaranteed $300,000 through the league, the rest are 'bonuses' for appearances and commercials paid by the team.

I'm still interested in seeing how the Gals would acquire Zidane.

I doubt it. I think we might see some retarded trade like 'Cobi Jones to Houston for a DP spot'. Its AEG, its easy to trade with yourself.

AEG will restructure Landon's deal to whereas it fits in without DP status. They trade for a second DP, have a bit of allocation, and its done.

I'm so sick of idea that wanting to play in MLS makes Donovan (or any other player) somehow less impressive. As soon as teams start trading USA's biggest stars in order to fit in more and more overage over-seasers, we're looking at the '70s all over again. Beckham in LA is great for MLS, Beckham in LA with Donovan is perfect. ZZ...."ZZZZZZZZ"

From my understanding, allocation money can't be used for "salary" but can be used for "signing bonuses" but the signing bonus can't be more than 50% of total compensation.

Or at least that the best I can recall from one of the Ask Peter Wilt threads.

Oh... Buff... thanks for putting "It's Raining Men" in my head all day. Thanks a friggin lot.

that must be some bonus structure Joseph and the Revs are battling over, 'cause otherwise they're only $10,000 apart in base salary ($300,000 to $310,000) and why would someone threaten to sit out over that?

I wish my boss would "insult" me with a $300K/year contract :(
