Say hello to our new forward Rüdiger:

http://epaper01.niedersachsen.com/eZeitung/2007101821139html/NP/images/img1122528.jpg

(awesome name for a Saint Bernard btw)
Wow, great pic. What was the Saint doing on the field? He looks just like my Saint did. I didn't bring her on the field, though.

---

'dolo played today against Switzerland. I only saw the first half, but he played pretty well, I thought. It was tough to judge, as there wasn't much flow to the game, but he was one of the brighter spots for the US in the first half.

There was no sign of the mythical Zizzo, though. Maybe Rudiger ate him?

Rüdiger is Tarnat's dog. :)

Little piece about Cherundolo from the local paper:

AT HOME IN KLEEFELD

The Sonny boy

by Tanja Piepho
„When I arrived in Hannover during the winter 9 years ago everything was white and I wondered how I was supposed to play soccer on snow“, says Steven Cherundolo. He puts on his youthfull smile that doesn‘t only charm longtime girlfriend Many and adds: „I really didn‘t think it would work.“ It did as he learned a few days later and the Californian had scored a deal with then 2. Bundesliga club Hannover 96 and was pretty proud of it. „As a 19-year old Hannover was a huge chance for me back then“.

How does a young man make it from one of the sunniest places of the world to Lower Saxony of all places? Pretty simple: „Barca wasn‘t interested.“
Steven also didn‘t want to learn a regular job and after two year he left the university of Portland and followed his mother‘s advise:
„I did what made me happy - playing soccer.“

At first Cherundolo lived in the Südstadt and then in the List until he finally stlled in Kleefeld.
Removed from the hectic city center the 28 year old has been living in the Philosophers Quarter with his girlfriend Mandy for 2 years now. When he‘s not training in the stadium he meets with friends to run through the Eilenriede (Hanover's forrest and park area) or has a barbecue and Hamburgers on his balcony. „I never liked real Fastfood, I prefer German food like Bratwurst or Schnitzel.“ He can do very well without Sauerkraut though but always takes a few bottles of wheat beer with him when he travels home two times a year. „The Amis don't manage to prosuce anything that good!"

After quite a few tumultuous nights in the past the player has started to settle down: „I enjoy the quietness Kleefeld offers even though from time to time I miss some nice bars, Cafés or good restaurants in my neighbourhood“.
Instead of that he likes to go to hockey matches in the evening or week-ends. Not to the close-by Pferdemarkt-stadium (the Indians play there, 3rd level) unless for skating a few laps himself, but to the Tui Arena (the Scorpions play there, top level. Hockey is rather big here in Hannover). „A few of my friends play for the Scorpions.“
Apropos friends - how does a well-know soccer-star go about finding friends he can trust?
„I started to get to know all of them back when I was still a nobody with 96“.

After having been promoted to the 1. Bundesliga the only 1.72m tall Cherundolo was known to all in Hannover at the latest. Apparently this doesn‘t bother Cherundolo, he always wanted to be close to the fans. When he was still living in the List the kids from the nearby soccer field were knocking regularly to get autographs for themselves and their friends.
„There has been a little bit of excitement here in Kleefeld as well when I moved in, after all my name is on the doorbell panel.“
In the meantime things have calmed down. „The neighbours respect my privacy.“

What will Cherundolo do once he doesn‘t play for 96 anymore ?

„Soccer will always be a part of my life, if not here then somewhere else in the world“. It also seems clear that Mandy will go with him, because ultimately family is the most important thing, Cherundolo knows.
„To start a family you‘ll need children - that would be my next plan.“

No apologies needed, the translation rocked. I couldn't hope to do as good a job translating to one of my second languages. :)

Tarnat has gone way up in my books, now that I know he has a St. Bernard.

I love how you can see the sprinklers going in the stadium's view. :D

Ahahaha, kicker gave Tarnat a four. Aahahaha.
Rediculous.
He was the best man on the pitch, he deserved at least a 2,5.

Hmm, last week there was article in the local paper about Tarnat refusing to tal to kicker journalists and now he gets a 4 for a very good game.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

I heard it was because Rudiger drooled on the journalist during the post-game interview. ;)

I thought they were kind of horrible on Friday. :o

Not only this friday.

They were horrible against:
*Hamburg, Bayern, Leverkusen

they were bad against:
* Karlsruhe, Nürnberg, Frankfurt

they were ok against:
* Bochum, Bielefeld, Duisburg, Stuttgart (does help to play a man up), Wolfsburg

they were good against:
Real Madrid :D

Dunno what this says about the league that we are 6th.

But at least they're grinding out results. I don't remember them doing that that often in past years, especially this early in the season.

A great match and a deserved victory over Dortmund.
Let´s take on that old lady next Saturday.

Another issue at Hannover is the contract with Italian supplier Diadora that will end in 2008. The local paper has spread a rumour that 96 could wear Under Armour next season. I mean, we all know their underwear, but could it be that Under Armour wants to enter the European market and sponsor all the teamwear including jerseys? Seems like a big step for a company with hardly any experience in soccer sponsoring outside of Maryland.

Damn, it looks pretty good for you this season!:) Kudos!

PS: No more playing time for Thomas Kleine lately?

No more playing time for Thomas Kleine lately?

Well, there are Vinicius and Fahrenhorst. I am sure that Kleine would play on the same level as those two. He will have to wait until one of the starters misses a match because of an injury or a red card, though. In the meantime, he will have to practise more and even play for the 4th division Oberliga team as he did yesterday.

Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei...
Well, too bad, why the heck did we pay money for Hanke?
Overall, if we win the next games this was onbly a small setback, should help to keep some people here on the ground, because of Bayern's and Karlsuhe's losses we still are quite well in the table, just with less space to the bottom.

Did you see Robert Enke in the "Aktuelles Sportstudio" show tonight? I decided to stay at home this evening only for watching him, since I have a special relationship to this guy. ;) In 1999 (the season when Borussia relegated for the 1st time) I cheered him up in front of the "Mannschaftsbus" after the defeat in Nuremberg, when he got massively abused by the fans during the whole game because of his decision to leave the club towards Benfica. He was really close to tears ... and after my nice words, he signed my Gladbach cap and gifted me his gloves.

Now he proved his class at "Sportstudio". You can only have a lot of sympathies for this guy! I really hope he'll become the national team's Nr.1 after the EC 2008!

Btw: What happened with his homepage? I miss him pissing in that fitness room...;)
