I'd also give this a try. I think Gerrard would really enjoy playing with Mascherano. Stevie can play in the center and Masch can clean up the messes behind him. Gerrard really needs to get going. He is having a sub par season by his standards, and I believe its a major reason why we are fighting for 3rd and not 1st. If we are going to get past Chelsea we need more from the captain.
Xabi and Momo can play against Wigan on the weekend, and all our CM's will be fresh for the Champions league.

It's true about Gerrard, but it is also true about Xabi and Sissoko. None of them have had memorable seasons.
I like the lineup Crown Paints put forward. Rafa needs to stop messing around in games like these, against teams like these. Hopefully an early goal by us will open this game up and we won't be left watching another Man City borefest.
I am hoping for two or three goals, hopefully Crouch can keep his goal scoring form, and I would like to see Pennant and/or Gonzalez score.
Is Rafa's plan for Gonzalez to just keep playing him hoping that he adjusts to the style of play in England? I guess besides Riise there aren't many other options considering that Aurelio and Kewell are injured.

Rafa thought he'd be ok by Wed, so i would suppose hed get the start rotation wise.
I kinda "blame" rafa for the city borefest, becouse as someone or 5 people mentioned, we need to learn to win against teams that just defend. Well, to me, Rafa is pretty astute and had been looking at doing just that earlier in the year, going to 3 at the back and using wing backs etc etc. Against city though, he reverted to "refuse to lose" as the best tactics for the big picture. He was willing to take a point on the road, but not to lose the game or even to overtire the squad. His attacking "concession" was to free stevie up to roam at will, sort of a split the difference kinda move. mind you, it could have worked, 1-0 and we'd all be happy. :p
Anyway, i think that this game he will be far more determined to win it. we have another game yet before chelsea, and so i think the 3 points will look pretty important to him. 3 here will leave us in a pretty good place.
Therefore, i have no idea who starts. :) whoever didnt on sat, i suppose.

We're at home- Southgate hasnt played for a win yet this year- I'd have minimum two up front, with two proper wingers and Capt OBE roaming behind them.

anyone else feel we did better when Sissoko was out and Rafa had to play Gerrard in centre midfield for most of the games?

After the snoozfest at Eastlands, I am hoping for a more attacking and adventurous line-up. I suspect that Middlesbrough, will flood the engine room and defend deeply. In that case, full backs need to go forward and join the attacks from wide areas. The wingers, such as they are, will also need to get into the box more often and I think Gerrard and Riise are as well equipped as anyone to do that. We have enough defensive cover in both Mascherano and Alonso, anyway.
This would be my line-up:-
-----------------Reina-----------------
-Finnan----Carragher----Hyypia-----Arbeloa--
--Gerrard------Mascherano----Alonso---Riise--
------------Crouch------Fowler-----
Subs:-
Dudek
Agger
Gonzalez
Pennant
Kuijt

Plenty of links at purelfc.com, more might be posted at lfcrss.com too from other sites.
I'd go for something similar to RedBird.

Interesting lineup:
Reina, Arbeloa, Riise, Carragher, Agger, Mascherano, Sissoko, Zenden, Pennant, Gerrard, Crouch.
Subs - Dudek, Hyypia, Fowler, Gonzalez, Kuyt.

--------------Crouch----------------
Zenden-----Gerrard-------Pennant
-------Masch--------Momo---------
Riise----Carra-----Agger-----Arbeloa
This is going to be ugly if Momo's passing is off. Otherwise, this lineup doesn't look too bad. Finnan gets a game off. I am sure we will see Gonzalez and Fowler/Kuyt introduced, all depending on which way the game turns.
