In an attempt to revitalize our forum on which some people have been responding to Lyon's sixth consecutive L1 title with big, big yawns, I'm starting a series of general discussion threads which will deal with everything concerning our players. If you have something to say on, feel free to drop by and leave a comment.
I'll start off with our beloved #1 guard, Gregory Coupet. :)

He's truly world class, only behind Buffon in my opinion. I still can't believe Domenech picked Barthez over Coupet.
I don't think he'll leave Lyon this summer, though I don't know how feasible it will be for him to fulfill Aulas's demands that he remain France's No. 1 until the next World Cup.

Im a huge fan of Coupet and would want no one else between the sticks for the club including Buffon.
I am a bit confused on that second part. Is there some contract obligation that he remain France's starter???

Well Barthez is a great goalkeeper, and he has a great deal of experience.

France was lucky to beat Por after Barthez's volleyball set-up to Figo in front of the goal.

Greg has picked up what seems to be a very serious injury while training this morning. His knee ligament might've been damaged.

He'll be out for 4 months, at least...
Good thing for Italia, not a very good news for France or Lyon.
Riou is gone  , let's buy Hugo Lloris...

well its go time for vercoutre. i think his development as a goalkeeper needed an oportunity like this.
is there a vercoutre [player] thread?

I am sad to see this happen. Even though I've always been a proponent of Sébastien Frey for Les Bleus, Grégory deserves more than this. Vercoutre isn't that bad, though I'd keep an eye on Mathieu Gorgelin, who's been challenging the highly-rated Joris Delle of Metz as the starting goalkeeper for the U-17 team, which will be playing in the U-17 World Cup in a couple of weeks.

this is probqbly the position where a long term injury hurts us the most.
i was very high on vercoutre until the CdL final he (mis)handed to bordeaux, but he's filled in for greg very well in the past, including a couple of fine matches in the CL, so i'm not sure if we need to get a backup for remy or someone to start.
the second big question is coupet's NT spot. he'll miss all the remaining qualifiers, and while that shouldn't compromise getting to the tournament, it will open up the question about who will start in schweizterreich.
if we can use 2006 as any indication, coupet should still be no.1 when he comes back, but that is a lot of guessing.

At his age, this type of injury can get very complicated to recover. When I first heard the news, I was afraid his career might come to an abrupt end..

interview on olweb (my translation):
asked if he would play against Rangers:
"If I had to decide today I'd say no. I'm not at 100%. I might be able to fool some people, but me, I know. I also have to deal with the calendar; there are only two more matches before Glasgow. If I want to play in 2 weeks it means I have to be ready this sunday, and that won't be the case. Coming back straight into a match like [Rangers] would be a big risk. It would be presumptuous. First, you have to respect the team. And what's more, Rémy is doing very well now. He made a big play on Touré's shot in the first half and two more in the second. There's no need to start pushing him in particular. And whether it's Rémy or Mika Landreau, I've never sought to put anyone under pressure. What's important is the stability of the team. There everything's OK, so I'm OK too. If I can go to Glasgow as the backup that would be a good thing already. I never claimed that I was going to play there. I indicated it as my goal for my reeducation. I need challenges like that. Frankly, when I speak of the Champions League, I'm thinking of the beginning of 2008."
at the same time you read in les cahiers du football that Barthez 'stated to France Football that he still hasn't ruled out a return in the NT, but added that during the WC in 2006 he "still wasn't 100% recovered from his injury". We would have rather have been told that before... or not at all.'
nice going Fab... you knew you weren't right but hid it from everyone to make sure no one took "your" spot. now we know why you played like a lame jackass. korea, materazzi... and you didn't get within spitting distance of ANY of italy's PK's. thanks buddy!

It's good to hear Coupet being so positive about his teammates. I hope you won't mind me using your translation for my blog, since it's a lot better than what I would come up with. :)

guignol, it's very apparent that you support Coupet and are pretty much anti-Barthez anti-Frey, while I think you well know that I share the opposite opinion. However, I think objectively it's kinda harsh to stay that Barthez played like a hmmm, gimpy donkey because I actually think he did well overall. Yes, the match against Italy was his worst, though almost all of the Azzurri penalties were well-taken. Against Korea he gagged on that goal, but I'd argue that really they should have killed off the game before that. In all the other matches, Barthez was very good, and in some cases, brilliant with some of his saves. Additionally - and I've always said this about him - he adds I believe an aura of confidence to his teammates who believe in him so they go on to win the game. I really think mentally the boost Barthez gives outweighs his weaknesses in other areas.
Anyway, it's only my opinion, though I'd have no issue if Barthez decides to come back. I'd welcome it, actually.
(Alright, I'll also admit I'm an idiot in the short term for backing Frey, but he is having a good season in Italy, despite his obvious non-enrollment in a low-carb diet.
