why not realistic?
17% of brazilian supporting the same team is irrealistic?

I think it's generally accepted that Barcelona has the biggest global fanbase.

we don't have 4 millions of native indigenous, the biggest amateur soccer championship is in Amanozas state (a state in the middle of amazon jungle).
youre wrong, north east and north west have the same interesting for soccer than the south brazilians.
and flamengo have the biggest fan bases in both regions, despite this regions have their proper teams.
altough, most of brazilian population live in the south regions of country.
edit: in the brazilian link, shows that 26% of brazilians don't have any team, and 3% support only the national team.

Who's Olympique in France? Marseille or Lyon?

Who's Olympique in France? Marseille or Lyon?
If it is really a French Olympique it can only be Marseille. Lyon is quiet unpopular in France and unknown everywhere else.

The figures for the UK are rubbish.
Spurs with less fans than Chelsea?
Boro with half a million fans? The population of Middlesbrough is only 150,000.
Completely unreliable.

That's absolute crap. You're telling me that Flamengo have 28,179,054 fans? Exactly, to the man? Are there even that many people in Brazil who regularly go to football matches? What's Flamengo's average home crowd?
Some of those numbers are several times bigger than the population of the towns, for mid-table/lower division clubs who definitely aren't taking fans from outside their catchment areas.

outside London I'd say it's very likely, nigh on certain, that a lot more support Chelsea than Spurs.
Middlesbrough itself only has 150,000 but the Cleveland distrist has 600,000 people. Other than Hartlepool & Darlington, there's not a decent team for miles.
With 5213 people in the survey it means each vote adds 11500 to a club's total. Boro's 452,000 is the vote of 39 people. Unless there was something in particular which might skew the replies to be being answered disproportionately by people from the Middlesbrough area then I'd say it's a pretty fair reflection.

the home crowd could change because some factors, like economic power of country.
but flamengo have more than 70% of his supporters living outside rio de janeiro state, and 50% of rio de janeiro state fans living far from the maracana (rio is one of the smallest states and have the size of Denmark).
from this 28 millions, less 3 milllions can go to every home game with comodity (transportation, etc etc)
the average income for a brazilian is R$750 (300 euros), and the price of ticket is 12 euros, then most of this 3 millions cannot go to all games in a month or even can go to one game.
but they still fill stadium in any place of brazil (like palmeiras, vasco, corinthians and são paulo).
crowds of more than 60k in maracana is very common before the reformation (and will be after the reform ends).
vasco play in manaus this year for the copa do brasil agains Fast (a amazonas state team with low fan base) Manaus is more than 2000km from rio, and we fill the stadium with local supporters.

Very kind of you to say, but we hardly class as a decent side at the moment.
Middlesbrough garner very little support from Country Durham other than the Teesside towns although they have pretty much a free reign throught the Northern half of North Yorkshire (although there are very few large towns there). Once you start getting down towards York and Harrogate then it's generally a Leeds area.

I'm still not buying 28 million, otherwise the sponsorship and TV revenue would be earth shattering.

the sponsorship and tv revenue are the biggest in brazil...
20 millions from petrobras (after 2007, now is 12 milions)
12 millions from nike
8 mill from schincariol (a beer company)
3,6 mill from gatorade
and 10 millions from warner (in next year)
more tham 45 mill from tv revenues
i bet any team outside europe have numbers close to that in exception of São Paulo.
2,5 reais ~= 1 euro.
the problem of flamengo is that more than 50% of this number is to pay old debts.

Without a shadow of a doubt, no. Not unless you are referring exclusively to the under 10s.
Spurs support is much stronger all over the place. If you go to Hertfordshire, or Essex or Suffolk or Norfolk, there will be alot of Spurs fans. If you go to Bristol or Wales, there will be alot more Spurs fans.
Chelsea are attracting new fans, but the vast majority of fans are over the age of 10.

That is assuming that 3/4 of the people that live there support Boro. That is highly, highly unlikely.
Any survey like that is bound to be pretty dubious.

All utterly meaningless.
Flamengo may claim to have 28 million fans. But does it really matter when only 25,000 of them, on average, bother to turn up to games?

Probably true now.
All johnny-come-latelies, half of whom are likely to piss off to another successful team if Abramovich decides that he's had enough.
