But then, as DevilDave has pointed out, you cann't add anything to the USA flag. So what to do?

Writing on the flag isn't very effective anyway, too busy with all the stars and stripes. I,m not sure if it's OK but I would suggest just a simple white stripe of cloth with the city or state name attached to the bottom of the flag. Or better yet just bring US flag, and a second banner with your city or state name on it. When I go to San Siro to watch AC Milan, there are red and black banners with names of cities from all over Italy and the world. I think the best thing US supporters could do is follow this example, everyone create a simple red banner with white lettering with state or city on it. Sams Army, should have a page on there website given instructions on how to do this, its very simple and cheap to make your own banner.

Well I think that 200-odd fans making a 7,000 mile trip for a friendly where we are missing 19 players is a fairly decent turnout - I wonder how many Americans (based in America) would travel to Wales in the same circumstances?

We had flags from every corner of Wales - which is the norm for Wales matches.
There were less flags than normal as a lot of Cardiff City fans didn't make the trip as they were playing in the play-off final on Sunday.
There were obviously a lot of Dragons there but there was also the Amber Army flag - the big black and Amber banner - from Newport County FC and my own flag made its debut too - the big St David's cross (black with gold cross).
Club v Country stuff goes on everywhere, but when it comes to flags it's almost compulsory to have either your team's name or town/village name on it!
Every Wales match sees the flags turnout increase and it's almost a compettiton before the match to get the best hanging space in order to get your flag on tv!!
BTW - if your flags are expensive over there, I got my flag (15ft x 7.5ft) for £186 (aprox. $300) over here.
If you're over for the Confed. Cup, why not order it online and collect it/get it sent to you whilst in Europe?

I don't want to speak for Tom but I'm pretty sure he was talking about Welsh nationals (well, UK nationals who are from Wales) living in the US, of which there are apparently a decent number.
If all you guys flew all the way from Wales for this match, I'm surprised your wallets didn't weigh the plane down so much it was unable to take off. ;)

Yes, there were between 150-200 of us who made the trip.
A large number of Cardiff City fans didn't come because City were playing in the Div2 play-off final on Sunday or there would have been more of us.

Given our cold relations with the French, the Naval Standard or the Gadsden flag would be a somewhat apropos (for some people) flag to bring to France... :D

i think the lack of flags is a disgrace. I by myself have purchased a pro made sign, and made 2 flags, working on a third. that is from a lower middle class family. I did all that in less than $200. If a fourth of Sams Army members spent 20 bucks they could make a decent flag with anything they want on it.

This is my big gripe, I'm sure a lot of the Sammers shelled out some big money to get to the match, so why not spend around $15.00 for a 3x5 US flag to bring with you. And the locals have no excuse at all, Target, Kmart, Ace Hardware, etc. you could have stopped at one of these places before the match. Please in the future, let's get this done.

The Baby-Ass Flag will be in France. Ed, the Keeper of the Flag and the guy who organized the collection to buy a replacement for the original, sent it to me and I will carry it to France. Getting it into the stadium is another matter but I am working on that too. I am sure that the French will love to see an 18 X 24 foot American flag. It was given its first cap on Monday at the U.S.-Wales game where Guy Gayle and others got it out there and unfurled it at the game.
The Big Ass Flag, first capped at the US-Costa Rica qualifier in Kansas City in April, 2001 was also purchased after Ed and his colleagues at the North Jersey Brigade organized contributions in Big Soccer threads. It is HUGE but it is hard to transport and you need at least 400 people standing and working together to display it. You don't always get that at national team games.
So we have flags. We need more passionate fans to take it to the next level. We are going to need 2 or 3 nights like Columbus to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Fan support might have made a difference last time. Maybe it will be the same next time.

Maybe Sam's Army should take a page out of the Barra's book and give each paying member a US flag or something.

there's a "raterzilla' thread in this same forum. somebody (perhaps Sachin) will be taking it to Columbus. I believe folks are trying to organize to make sure it is always present.
