I am currently doing a group college assignment titled "Sports on TV and why are they popular" for my Introduction to Broadcasting class.
I have searched for the history of soccer around the world and found that England was one of the first few countries that played football during the middle ages .Later during the 19th century few other european countries also formed their own football associations and then football spread to the British colonies.
I can say that it became a popular sport in third world countries because British influence made it a popular sport in the then British colonies before their independance and that's how it got into their countries which is also the reason why there are still playing it now.The problem is; I have no decent sources, the so called 'encyclopedia' websites have only one-sentence-lines like "It spread around the world through British influence" or
"it arrived in the colonies" . Even so, the most detailed they can get is about south america and not colonies worldwide.
1)Can anyone provide any links of any websites that explains of the spread of football through many different regions in just one full article?
The requirement of this is so that I have a reliable source as stated in the assignment guidelines.
2)Is it correct to say that football is popular because it is a sport that had been passed on from generation to generation? In my country Malaysia, children had interest in the sport before they even started watching the World Cup.(I can't comment on other asian countries cause I don't know what are the reasons why they like football). If what I say here is not correct, feel free to correct me since I don't claim to be right.
3)Since I have to make a writing about football's relevence to the topic of Broadcasting, just including the history of it isn't enough.
Can anyone give me any links of detailed websites that explain how the satelite, cable(?) or live recording helped make football popular among worldwide viewers during the 1970s or 80s to the current century?
I've visited FIFA and ESPN websites but the information wasn't very detailed for an assignment.
Thanks in advance if anyone can give me the links. :)
