Great article, but I can't help but think there should be even more coverage (and again, what's with FC in the headline again? I thought they had settled that with their reader's poll). I've written them a letter, part of which I have reproduced below.
People love soccer in this town - your choice to provide full world cup coverage prooves it. So where are the TFC features? The lengthy interviews? The schedule? The roster? Photos of the team, all lined up nicely for the season? The social/economic impact having a major sports team at the Ex will have on Parkdale and the city? What about articles on our supporters planned away trips? Why no features on the support planning to come here and the dollars they will bring? There are so many stories here, and your paper is missing the chance to take charge and show the other papers that your paper is truly behind our team. At least a GO TFC GO sign in the Saturday edition for home games would be a start. If the Star prepares a home opener pull out section for April the 28th, with a proper team photo, photos and bios of all the players, in colour, with serious discussion of their away results and some colour features of the fans, I will personally purchase at least twenty copies so I can send them as souvenirs to friends and family. Now multiply that times 20,000 other supporters.
In expanding TFC coverage, you might even see your weekly readership go up. Your editors would like that surely?
I hope that the other MLS cities' newspapers are doing a better job of pulling out the stops for their teams' season debut. This is our maiden season, after all. The Sun hasn't even bothered interviewing the cheerleaders...I'm not feeling the love here from the Toronto media.
