LOL. "BSers" doesn't read nice, huh?
I want to confirm something. I imagine the answer will be "yes."
Those of you whose teams won the Intercontinental Cup - Independiente, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Velez Sarsfield... when your teams won, did you consider your teams "intercontinental champions" or "world champions?"
This argument comes from a few Brazilian fans who think that all teams who won those games vs. Europe were not world champions, and that as such, only Corinthians, Sao Paulo (my team, which won the Intercontinental Cup twice), and Internacional are truly world champions.

Intercontinental champions, that's also how the clubs see it (At least River, I don't know about the others)

I always saw it as Intercontinental champions. It's only a tournament with one rival, how can you be considered World champions? It's like winning the Recopa and saying that you are "el campeon de America".. That doesn't work, atleast not in my point of view.

Intercontinental, but I could see why the term "world champions" could be used since it was the closest thing to that effect for a long time until the world cup of teams came along. Even then it will take sometime and changes to make it a truely world championship or it might never be truely there.

Strange. THe 3 River Plate fans said "intercontinental," but my research of your country's press shows that when Boca won it in 2000 and 2003, Boca was hailed as a "world champion" and the same thing was said by its fans.
IN Brazil, when Flamengo, Gremio, and SPFC won this titles in the 80s-90s everyone called it a "world champion" title.

I don't see why it shouldn't be considered the World Champions. When Boca win it, I call them the World Champs.
In 2000, they beat the best team out there, Real Madrid. Everybody was talking how good Real Madrid was etc etc.
This is my argument:
If the European team wins, they are claimed in Europe to be the best team in the world. So, why is it that when the South American team wins, it isn't seen the same way??

Because it is not exactly accurate, sure you can assume that the best team between Europe or S. America is the best in the world but it doesn't make it so. Plus, everyone knows what happens when you assume.:D
To make it truely the best team it would be more than just one game were anything can happen, something like the mundialito de clubs or a best of series (at least two games). So for example if River wins it, but then the same line up loses to Banfield in the local league, it doesn't make Banfield the best in the world either. Its just one game so I tend not to read too much into it, but it is sure nice to win it for the recognition and bragging rights (plus the money).
As to the media, sure they will say they are the world champs, since they want to sell newspapers back at home and what fan doesn't want to hear that their team is the best in the world.

usually when a south american team wins the european teams(well the fans at least) claim the tournament does not mean anything.

I don't think even those Brazilian teams can lay claim to being world champs:rolleyes: . To be considered to be the best in the world in club terms would mean a prolonged tourney in wich one would play top teams and then a series of final games not much unlike what we do here in North America with Basketball, Baseball or Hockey. However, this is just not doable in the vast world of soccer;) . I mean how many consider Italy to be world champs or the best team in the world:p

When I was a kid I remember people talked about Independiente being 'Campeon del Mundo'. Same with Racing. (I was too young when Racing won it, but people still talked about it when I was a kid.) And when Boca won it in 86 it was also celebrated as World Champions.
I think it is obviously not a true world title, because it didn't include the whole world. But nevertheless it was a matchup between the two strongest regions, so it's fair to call it that.
Maybe things will be different in the future as the rest of the world may get stronger teams, but based on the timeframe that intercontinental cup was played, it's fair to say it matched up the champions of the two conferences that were clearly above all others. Europe and South America.

Is that because of that bullshit Little World Cup v. the Intercontinental? Because all the teams from South America and Europe (big surprise) end up winning anyway even with all the other confederations.
I guess technically that's true, except that teams from CONCACAF have been playing the libertadores for awhile so if they haven't won any world titles yet, that still speaks well of the SA teams.
*shrug*
Those guys sound like braggarts anyhow. I still consider all of our teams world champs.

Yes, it is; Corinthians and Internacional fans are the worst. Internacional fans at least have last year's Libertadores; Corinthians has never won it.

I would say World Champions, best of south america vs the best of europe, just that now its called mundial de clubes and has a couple of more teams from different continents but the ones in the finals are the same,a south american team vs a european team. Its one game yes or it was like that before but to get there either team had to go through their group stage and later knock-out round.
World Champion is a good title to the winner of the intercontinental cup.
