American Red's Robbie Fowler thread question merged into here:

American Red

Questions:

1) Why did Liverpool get rid of Fowler? What exactly happened?

2) Who are the most famous/ talented Liverpool players of all time and why (what makes them special)?

3) What year is the best all-time Liverpool squad and why?

Thanks in advance :).

1) Because he had suffered a series of difficult injuries that robbed him of form and consistency at precisely the same moment that Micheal Owen started coming through. Additionally, he and Houllier never had the easiest of relationships. When the time finally came, we made the most of Leeds' insane spending splurge and got £13m for a player who had not been in top form for nearly two years and who has never recaptured that form since.

2) Famous and talented are not necessarily the same. And it's a generation thing. You ask USScouse or KopiteinKC and the answer will be Billy Liddell (http://www.bobpaisley.com/liddell.htm). You ask some of us regulars here who have not yet started spending their pension but have been Liverpool fans for a while and it would be Kenny Dalglish (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/past_players/players/dalglish/) or perhaps Ian Rush (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/past_players/players/rush/).

Then there's the American contingent who, due to the vagaries of international exposure to football, have more recent attachments and they would probably choose yer man Blobby Growler.

3) Again - a generational argument. I won't even listen to anyone who doesn't say "the 1988 team" in answer to that question, but some of the older fans will swear blind that the 1977 team surpassed all others, before or since. Really old fans might scoff at that and say that the 1965 side, the first to win the FA Cup, was the best side we've had.

So in answer to why, I can only give you the 1988 perspective: they had everything a superior side needs; talent, individual skill, combined understanding, vast experience, speed, toughness, poise, grace. The attacking triumvirate of Beardsley, Barnes and Rush is, as far as I'm concerned, still to be bettered by anyone to this day. The defence was an impregnable barrier to all and the midfield was the perfect blend of no-nonsense ball winners and lethal passing and movement. That season I saw football that I just don't think I'll ever see again. Arsenal in the past two years have been similar and have widely been acclaimed as untouchably superior to their peers when in full flow; so consider that this was in an age when the game was a good deal simpler than it is now - you can imagine just how totally out of this world that Liverpool side were. They were untouchable, capable of playing the game at a level that no one else in the country could even begin to dream of.

I am first a Celtic fan but after the Hoops I have always been a Liverpool supporter,so I got at least some satisfaction after last Sundays disaster at Motherwell, anyway I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can get a scarf that is half Liverpool-Celtic,I have seen them in pictures and on TV when the Reds play,I have searched everywhere on the Internet and cannot find them anywhere.I would gladly purchase one from somebody,or if someone could pick me up one and send it to me,I will supply my address if I hear from anyone. Thanks for your help.

I bought one in Walton Breck Road -- across the street from Anfield. Perhaps someone with more regular access could pick one up next fall

I have been watching Liverpool for a lot of years and without doubt it a generation thing, my Dad swore no better player could lace the boots of Billy Liddle and even as he got older and Liverpool got better his opinion was always Shankley built the foundation but Billy Liddle was what inspired the club to become great.
I have been very lucky to see Liverpool become good then great then phenomenal, player like Ian St John, Ron Yates and Sir Rodger Hunt we thought we were spolied, could it get any better, could we achive more we were winning the league on a consistant basis then along came the boys of seventy seven Tommy Smith, Jimmy Case, Kevin Keegan and of course Crazy Horse still running the show, they took it to a new level beating Brossia Moenchengladbach and becoming the Champions of Europe oh what a night, what a week, what a month "if we win nothing else I will die happy" was a quote from my Dad but the greatest manager never to get knighted was strengthening his squad and brought in King Kenny, Souness and Hansen and to me that was a great team it went on to retain the European Cup with the One nil win at Wembley and winning the league cup was second nature, then in 83-84 Fagan did the treble of European Cup, League Cup and League Champions. After Heysel Fagan retired and King Kenny took over and added Barnes, Beardsley, Mcmahon and Aldridge (the Rushie look alike) you could only belive no one was going to beat a team like that, what football they played you couldn't buy a ticket and even match of the day had the most viewers ever, they didn't just beat teams like Forrest they spanked them, the Arsenals and Manuer could only look on and hope that one day thay would be that good, as a supporter you just knew you were going to win you could feel the power as you stood there, if the other team scored you would score two it was just the way of the world. So until it happens again when I watch Liverpool walk on the pitch and I know in my heart we are going to win and the power returns I will stick with the team of 1988 as the best I have ever seen in the red shirts of Liverpool.

I haven't seen a side that was so head and shoulders above its competition.

Another three years for the big lad. Nice to see, as are his comments about the process.

WARNOCK DELIGHTED WITH NEW DEAL (http://liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N149789050824-1053.htm)

"After the Middlesbrough game the manager took me to one side and told me he wanted my agent to meet up with Rick Parry because he was happy with the way things are going. My agent had a meeting yesterday morning and the negotiations were very easy. It was all sorted on the same day and I asked if I could sign it as soon as possible. The contract was drawn up during the afternoon and I signed it after the game."

HEIGHWAY SEES HIS FAITH IN WARNOCK REWARDED

MASSIVE NEWS!!

ENGLAND goalkeeper David James has been dropped as the face of retail giant H&M in favour of Liverpool footballer Luis Garcia.

The Spanish midfielder will take James's place on billboards to publicise their new men's range.

The high street store, which has a branch in Church Street in Liverpool city centre, denied the switch was anything to do with James's recent poor performance in a game England lost 4-1 to Denmark.

A spokesman for H&M said: "We wanted a change of face. David James's replacement has nothing to do with his performances on the pitch."

Garcia, who signed for Liverpool from Barcelona in June 2004, will model the store's autumn range for businesswear.
