Anyone here play this game (http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/default.asp)? If so, what do you think of it? :)

Also, which of the 18 different nations in the game do you prefer to play as... and why?

P.S. = Does Rise of Nations sort of remind you of the boardgame History of the World (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/prod/hotw) (just curious)?

There seems to be a pretty nice article (http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/comics/5931751.htm) about this game in the Saturday, 5/24/03 edition of the San Jose Mercury News. :)

Bought it a few months ago and think pretty highly of it. Wasn't thrilled with the campaign mode or whatever it was where you went through the ages and tried to take over the world but the single map ones where you could just start from scratch against various nationalities was the good part. As for the favorite nation I think it was the chinese or the koreans(been a month since i played it), which ever one gave you bonus citizens when you completed additional cities, was a greta boost to immediately get citizens you could send to collect resources or build wonders because for some reason as any other nationality I was always low on citizens. Only problem was as time went on you had more citizens than you knew what to do with but they make a good militia at least.

I believe you played as the Koreans. In any case, I'm glad you enjoyed the game. :)

You should get the expansion pack as well: it adds more civilizations, scenarios and options (including types of government).

So so game, nothing new really. Same old RTS stuff. Can't find anyone to play it with online, which really sucks.
Was rated high by critics because of the hype and because it's Microsoft. I would have given it 80%, but it's not game of the year material.

Got the expansion and I thought it was pretty good. The new campaigns were actually pretty good. Had fun with the Napolean one and am working on the Alexander the Great at the moment. The new civs are decent too, especially the Lakota. I think that's where they needed to go to make it more interesting, make nations more distinct as opposed to nation X gets Y% bonus to resource Z and nation A's B unit gets C more points to attack/defence or whatever. The Lakota's citizens producing food without farms and not being able to build farms while building cities anywhere on the map with the raiding bonus really made you change your strategy. Go figure it looks like the Americans are the strongest civilization too. The types of government with the "patriot" unit were a nice touch too. All in all I thought the expansion definately made the game more interesting and extended its shelf life for me.

I also believe that the expansion pack added to an already great game, and am glad that it introduced those smaller-sized campaigns as well. :)

It seems that the Americans start of just as strong as almost everyone else in that same time period (if not a bit weaker), but by the end they are the strongest civilization.
