Milan : Bayern - BASKAKOV (RUS)
PSV : Liverpool - LAYEC (FRA)
Roma : Manchester United - FANDEL (GER)
Chelsea : Valencia - OVREBO (NOR)

Interesting group that is relatively inexperienced, when compared to many other UCL referees. There is not one WC06 referee among them and in fact, it can be argued that all two of the four are the "second" referees from their respective home countries.

And Bayern, for one, is a bit upset at the official appointed for its match:

"'We are all unpleasantly surprised that a Russian, and a very inexperienced Russian at that, will be in charge of the match,' Rummenigge was quoted in an interview with German sports news agency SID on Monday....

Baskakov, a FIFA referee for seven years, has officiated at four Champions League matches this season and one Euro 2008 qualifier between Bosnia and Greece..."

Ah, the wonders of racism and poorly-founded concerns.

Ah, the wonders of racism and poorly-founded concerns.

I don't think racism applies to this issue!

I did think that the penalty kick was wrong. But I had the benefit of several replays.
