For Christmas I received the first 3 seasons of The Sopranos. I'm almost done and will get to season four sometime this week. Just intrigued in how all this will end. Last season was a bit of a downer for me with the whole gay Vito story line and all. I hope it goes out in a blaze of glory.

Add the [R] -- May as well make this the official discussion thread.
Last season was the worst season ever by a mile. Or a million miles.
They better get it right or they will lose the "best TV show ever" label that is commonly tossed about. (I'm not saying that, but I've seen it in print quite a few times.)

Bingo.
I've loved this show in the past and I'm hoping for something great with these last episodes, but they better step up after last spring's awfulness.

Re-watching the first 4 seasons, the wow factor is pretty high. The acting is still top notch but the writing has varied from inconsistent to downright boring. But the first four years set the bar awful high. They couldn't remain at that level for ever. I'm willing to give them that out.
I just want to see that Czeckoslavkian Interior decorator come back with guns a blazin' :D

I used to be one of those guys. Then the Wire came out.

I've been catching up on the seasons I missed with A&E and HBO on demand and boy I've missed out all these years.

QFT! The Wire surpassed every expectation and every show to date. Not to poo-poo on Sopranos which has given me much entertainment over the years, but it's just not as good in its best season as The Wire has been in its "worst".

It didn't get more boring, just more cerebral. If you want more murders and action, there are plenty of other shows out there. The writing and acting is as good as it ever was, it's just going in a different direction.

Good article in the Chronicle today.

If you think David Chase -- after coming this far by producing a landmark television series that incorporates banality into two electrically dangerous families, meshes pathos with misogyny to create one of the greatest antiheroes ever, boldly leavens violence and sex with adolescent humor and malapropisms and promotes unspoken character evolution over wordy exposition -- is suddenly going to become predictable and formulaic just so you'll go to bed happy, forget it. "The Sopranos" is likely to leave story lines, budding plot developments and favorite characters frozen in time, their end game merely something to guess at forever.

Is Bobby's smackdown of Tony a symbolic "beginning of the end" for Mr. Soprano? ;)
Boy that fight helped wake me up. I was just about to doze off at that point of the episode.

Really? Watching people play Monopoly and tell old family stories is not my idea of a good episode. I actually missed the fight, since I started channel flipping due to boredom.

Gotta love the denial or self-delusion. "It makes us look like a dysfunctional family." "My husband is not a vindictive man."
