There are a lot of great foreign movies that never see US Screens. I have been lucky to see a few in my time.

My favorites include Infernal Affairs, City of God, Brotherhood of the Wolf and some others I cant remember right now.

Im looking for some more movies.

So post your fav foreign flicks of the past 10 to 15 years.

One of my top 10 movies ever is La Double Vie de Véronique.

Krysztof Kieslowski is the director and I went to see it in the theatre at the old Key in Washington D.C. - think it's gone now. Anyway, it was after reading Desson Howe's iirc review where he said that it exemplifies some director, I'm not sure who any more, who said the key to making a good film is find a beautiful girl and let the cameras roll.

It tells the story of two girls who are born on the same day, one in Warsaw and one in Paris and look exactly alike. Their whole lives, they both feel as if there is something missing; the movie tells their story.

The music is absolutely amazing.

Le Diner De Con

French comedy, 1998.

It is about a dinner game that is played between fortunate men, they each go out and find a person they feel is the biggest idiot and bring them to dinner.

However, for our main character things go from bad to worse.

A personal favorite, this is probably the purest comedy I have seen in years. I would highly recommend it.

If only we had a draft about this...

Make it an all-time foreign film draft. Not limited to today's stuff.

Hell, just make it an all-time foreign draft, including the Holy Roman Empire, the Ming Dynasty, and Tenochtitlán.

Isn't every movie foreign to everyone except the people from the same country?

Hehehe that's what I was thinking. I'm guessing it's foreign film to Oscar criteria.

On that note, for the sake of Dutch film, I'm putting forward foreign film Oscar winners Antonia's Line, and The Assault. The former is my favourite Dutch film ever even though (or perhaps especially because) it got some rotten reviews from the conservative wing in the US, as it is, admittedly, a relatively feminist flick.

I am going down the list from my part of the world.... not foreign to me. :)

Chungking Express: My favorite Wong Kar-Wei's movie.
In the Mood for Love: the French loved this one.

The Wedding Banquet: Ang Lee's major breakout.

"Farewell My Concubine: The critics loved it. I thought it dragged too long.

Raise the Red Lantern: Perhaps, the best ever Chinese-made movie. It was a chick movie that anyone can enjoy. :) It was 15 years ago so it made this list.

Hero(Zhang Yimou): The review was mixed. I like this one very much. Some said that it was done for receiving award.

Election: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434008/
This movie has not been released in the West. In HK, it was rated as high as Infernal Affairs. The movie touched the issue of the election Triads' leader(Chinese mafia in HK). The movie indirectly talked about a particilar gang in HK. Frankly speaking, that was exactly how they ran their organization. Don't ask me how I know. :)

I was an extra in the Hong Kong remake of Pulp Fiction. I reckon that's the best foreign movie ever made.

Good Lord, Antonia's Line is one of the most depressing, horrid films ever made. And I am pretty liberal. Unlikable characters. You want to take a bath after watching it.

Now Character. That is a great Dutch film. Dickensonian but with a sliver of light.

The Vanishing is about the only other dutch movie that can be recommended.

The Dutch I have met are gregaroius and happy go lucky. But I have only met a few. The rest must be somber and tending toward the dark.

After recently watching it, I think Oldboy deserves a mention. Great movie.

That was a tough movie to watch, have you seen Audition?

If this is going to all-time thread, I must recommend Les Diaboliques. 50's black and white French film. Superb movie!

And I would recommend anything Gael Garcia Bernal has done, Motorcycle Diaries, Science of Sleep, Amores Perros, etc.

Not sure if this counts but The Count Of Monte Cristo, with Gerard Depardieu, was absolutely fantastic. All in French, I think it was like 400 minutes long, but as a fan of Gerard and the novel, it was the best 400 minutes I've spent doing nothing but watching.

Another Depardieu film, "Cyrano de Bergerac", the big-nosed poet film:D

I do not know this movie. A comedy???

I agreed with someone here about the movie Der Untergang(Downfall).

Also
Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) -- original Vanilla Sky.
Lucía y el sexo -- frankly, I like the sex scenes.

I will go into more European movies later.
