The best is clearly Chink's up in the Northeast on Torresdale and Benner, right near the Tacony.
The place has that retro 50's look, too...but only because it hasn't been renovated since it was built.

Oh yeah, every few years someone raises a big stink over the name. PW or the City Paper was all over someone trying to get it changed a year or two ago, as memory serves.
As it turns out it's kind of appropriate, as "Chink" was the guy who started it; he got his nickname due to his ocular shape.

Pat's is very good, but another really good one is Rick's, in the Reading Terminal Market.

I just watched the Bobby Flay's "throwdown" with Tony Luke. Pretty tasty episode.

Now that I am thinking of this, can someone ship me some good cheesesteaks? Or are they considered against Homeland Security rules?
BTW I was desperate today, so I actually ate frozen Philly Cheeseteak Hot Pockets. Thats what I am reduced to these days!

it could've been worse. i was in scranton visiting some friends during college, and we order sandwiches, so of course i wanted a 'philly cheesesteak' (or so the takeout menu said). when the delivery arrived, mine was the only thin, square sandwich in the bunch.
it was a slice of steak-umm (not even chopped up), a slice of pre-packaged, nondescript cheese, on 2 slices of white bread.
