Newcastle winger Laurent Robert is to undergo an X-ray on Monday to determine whether he has broken his back.
The Frenchman, who joined the Magpies last summer, could be out for the season if his worst fears are realised.
It is not known by the club or the player when the injury first developed.
At best, he is expected to be out until Christmas.
