I would describe myself as a passive Pearl Jam fan. I don't own all their records, I think they are good and all that, better than most bands in fact and I've seen them live.

My question though is, why in the world did they release their entire tour a few years back? They don't have that big of a playlist (all of the albums had very similar setlists) and its not like they are a jam band that does a ton of improvisation.

Was this purely to put off bootleggers? Did it sell well?

It sold very well. They have a very dedicated cult of fans, who most likely bought each concert they went to. Pearl Jam has somewhere around 75 songs that they play live.

I know they are huge, I mean they've had multi-platinum albums and all that stuff. The reason I asked, is I was curious if fans would lay down hard earned cash for basically the same tunes over and over again. I say this in comparison to Phish (my favorite band) who has played probably well over 500 different tunes live. I saw an interview with their guitar player that says on any tour they usually have around 300 songs ready to go. Several years ago, I saw Phish four nights in row and they didn't repeat a single song in any of the shows. They played around 100 songs those four nights. I know their big fans don't hesitate purchasing their Live Phish series because of the variety of tunes and the improvisation, I was just curious about the motivation of the average Pearl Jam fan.

Yep. Pearl Jam has been my favorite band since 6th grade. But I rarely post on these "Official Pearl Jam Threads."

I posted the link to the mp3 around here somewhere a few weeks ago and again a few days ago.

In other PJ news...

- Ed, Jeff, Stone, Mike, and Matt were all on The Cane Show yesterday. There is a brief story on it on 5H as well as a link to some pics (Ed has hair again!), the entire video in RealAudio, and some mp3s (I havn't had a chance to listen yet). A quote:

"They say the tour will start in the spring (nothing confirmed yet), with plans to play some benefits before the end of the year in Seattle, and opening for The Who in Chicago next week. "

http://www.fivehorizons.com/tour/cc/t2002.shtml#09/18/02

- For those of you who like Five Horizons as much as I do, there is a note on the website explaining their decision to stop updating their website w/ the exception of the Concert Chronology. Its too bad, because I always looked forward to their info. Good to see they will keep updating the concert info though.

Help.

I can't think of an old PJ's song's name The one with the line "Victims in demand for public shows"

What's the name. It's on Vitalogy, right?

I do like the song, but something about Eddie's voice bothers me on the studio track. It seems like he's holding back a little. I prefer the live version, but maybe the studio version will grow on me.

i always love ed and boys live... i think it's part of being a fan of a band... you see the f*-ups and how they react and all that

a cd just gives you the music... so they want it technically perfect... we want the rawer sound

Elliot Smith eat your heart out:

the selfish, they're all standing in line
faithing and hoping to buy themselves time
me, i figure, as each breath goes by
i only own my mind
the north is to south what the clock is to time
there's east and there's west and there's everywhere life
i know i was born and i know that i'll die
the in-between is mine
i am mine
and the feeling, it gets left behind
oh the innocence lost at one time
significant behind the eyes
there's no need to hide
we're safe tonight
the ocean is full cuz everyone's crying
the full moon is looking for friends at high tide
the sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied
i only know my mind
i am mine
and the meaning, it gets left behind
oh the innocence lost at one time
significance behind the eyes
there's no need to hide
we're safe tonight
whoa!
and the feelings, they get left behind
oh the innocence broken with lies
significance between the lines
we may need to hide...
and the meanings, they get left behind
oh the innocence lost at one time
we're all different behind the eyes
there's no need to hide
